Lake District

Hi everyone,

We have hired a caravan for the season on the lake Windermere, and we are thinking about buying an inflatable boat to hold a min of 2 adults and 2 children aged 9 and 6, but living in Manchester I do not have a clue what Im doing and seem to be going round in circles reading various forum pages.

We want the engine to have enough HP to pull a child on a knee board/rubber ring and make it exciting enough with 2 adults and another child in the boat.

Hopefully we can buy something 2nd hand that we are able to sell on next year without losing too much money.

Any help/advice would be really appreciated

Thanks in advance

Windermere has 10knot speed restrictions, you might find oars a better bet!
Being chased by the wardens might make it more exciting though...

I would of thought 10 knots was fast enough for young kids!?

If you want a good holiday where you can play all day with the ribs & body boards the kids will love it try this place i've 5 times now it's great it's worth the extra miles
Self Catering Cottages Scotland, Loch Lomond Accommodation forget windermere with the ribs the warders are on you're back all the time & it's a big fine now for speeding

Forget ringo's on Windermere, its not allowed, but children can quite happily kneeboard within the 10kts speed limit.

Windermere is still a fantastic place, even with the speed limit and as a newbie, 10kts will feel plenty fast enough.

I think you are going to need a 3:5 to 4m rib or Sib, if its a Rib you will Need a minimum of a 40hp but because its only for use on the lake I would go for a sin without about 25hp.

Where are you staying ( some places have restrictions on engine size for launching )

I use my sib on Windermere, it's a really nice place, various places you can stop and get a pint and food, ice cream for the kids etc
The 10mph speed limit Is frustrating, and I have been caught speeding but just got a "severe warning" from the warden (nice guy, just doing his job)
I used to have a 10hp outboard on a honwave sib, that was fine for 2 adults/2 kids on Windermere, but I'd advise 25hp minimum if you plan on towing toys in the future

Windermere is beautiful loads to see and do . with a sib ( agree with 3.5 to 4m with 25/30hp to tow) you can get down to the swan at newby bridge if your careful ( dont go past the pub as their is a weir and it gets very shallow!) and right up to Ambleside several free jetties.
Small point 10mph changed to 10 knotts (11.5mph) 2012 as others have said fast enough for kids knee boarding.
you need to register your boat ( from memory £15ish for 12 months. and display numbers buy a board and get the numbers ebay/wilko's) they wont stick on your tubes)
Launching is an issue wher is your caravan?

Thanks for the reply's.

We re staying at Hill of Oaks. I think we can launch from the site.

So I should be looking at a SIB that is around 3.5m and with a 25hp for knee boarding.

Can you recommend any SIB's, outboard engines that don't depreciate as much and or are sought after in the used sales world so that I wont find it too difficult to sell on next year.

Cheers

Stick to top brand names for sib and outboard and you'll always have a good re-sale value

Will you be using a trailer? If not definately buy a 2 stroke because a 4 stroke will be too heavy to lift into the car etc

very easy launching at Hill o' Oaks. Daughter launches a ski-boat there when the weather is fit, which wasn't often last year. Pray for a better summer!

yes hill of oaks is where i normally stay, two slipways 3 jettees great site!

last sib i had was Honwave and Yam 30hp two stroke, yam engines have good resale, i sold my Honwave easy,
there are other good sibs and engines.
to wakeboard youll need a sib with a inflatable v to be able to plane.

inflatable v is the hull (bottom of boat) if you buy a flat bottom sib boat it will not plane (rise out of the water) you will therefore not go fast enough to tow a knee board.

two types of inflatable v
  1. aluminium floor with inflatable tube underneath
  2. all inflatable floor
pros and cons to both i had 1. more rigid, but more involved to make, i had a trailer for it.

big debate though

i`ve been looking at the honwave 4m alli ....brand new £900
but a little worried on it`s weight

my current sib is a 3m that a push with a 15 mariner in my honest opinion it is a little small for 4 people but planes a treat

i dont think you need to go silly as you may not like it! but a 3.3m or 3m at a push with an 8 or 10hp should give plenty of fun , check out one of aj`s videos i`m not sure what he`s got but it`s a small sib with plenty of fun

if you keep an fleabay for a yam, mariner, merc, etc you`ll have no problem selling on

off to the lakes myself this weekend well carlisle anyway

Completely agree with this. Stick to the premium brands and you will sell with very little loss. For engine go 2 stoke Yamaha, Mariner, Mercury. For Sib think Avan, Zodiac, Honwave, Suzumar, Bombard etc.

Although a 3-3.4m with a 10hp will be great fun on the lake, it wont be big enough or have enough power to board the kids. My son can board behind a Honwave 4m with a 20hp 2 stroke, but only just.

We had caravans on Hill of Oaks for years when we were kids, it was a great place when virtually every caravan had a boat. Depending on where your caravan is, you may be close enough to one of the many launching points to get away without a trailer.

I agree, these 20 - 30 hp engines are too much for a 3 - 3.5m SIB, my 3.10 flys with a 9.8 hp Tohatsu, I have been around boats all my life and at times when I am on my own it worries me how quick it is. Go easy guys.

Agreed..... I've had a few quick-ish cars and motorbikes but my sib still feels rapid on anything but flat water
One person in my futura with 25hp on choppy water feels quicker than flat out my yamaha R6
