Cabin Rib Wanted

Hi there - i'm looking to buy a cabin rib.
New to boating and live out in Jersey.
Wife plus 3 young kids.
Have seen a few - any thoughts on the following.
Any help with valuation would be much appreciated:

2010 Redbay Stormforce 8.4m Expedition Cabin RIB Power New and Used Boats

Like the look of this one and can be had at £65k Vat free.
Seems a little over priced

Excalibur Offshore 9m for sale Ireland, Excalibur boats for sale, Excalibur used boat sales, Excalibur Inflatable Boats For Sale 2010 Excalibur - Apollo Duck

Similar to above but much less expensive. I also understand that Excalibur closed down but their ribs are beautifully built, much like those at Redbay

Redbay Stormforce 7.4 Expedition for sale Ireland, Redbay boats for sale, Redbay used boat sales, Redbay Inflatable Boats For Sale Redbay Stormforce 7.4 Expedition (2008) - Apollo Duck

This one also looks pretty decent

I also know there was a Redbay 8.4 2008 Expedition on Apollo Duck Ireland a while back for 42,000 Euro which makes the current Redbay 8.4 I have linked, a little over priced.

Any thoughts/info much appreciated.

Cheers

Andy

Check out Redbay website pre-owned boats there is a 8.4 on at present within your budget, needs a bit of tlc by the looks of it. Also one on Southampton dry stack a 7.4 Redbay.

I had a good look on the Redbay website - i'm looking for a hard cabin though, with closing door cause of kids! If it was just me, I would buy a new Humber Offshore tomorrow but my Mrs is having none of it.

The one at Southampton looks good, if a fair bit more than the 7.4 that I linked to at the top.

Thanks for your help

Wilk may have a response. I once quoted on ribnet this.

“Seem to remember a rib international review by HMS. It was less than complimenting about the expeditions handling. I gathered it was quite a different boat from the stormforce. Was issue 76 june/july07”

IIRC Expedition just refers to the "lid" not the hull. Stormforce is the whole range. The details are in the numbers... there is something significantly different between the X.Y and XY0 ranges - but even then I'm not sure its the running surfaces. Not sure exactly what the article said, but also bear in mind that the hull alone is only part of the story - the engine you pair it with is important.

OP - what age are the kids? If they are at the age where having a door to shut them in matters, my experience suggests you won't be able to use a RIB with them aboard in anything but good conditions, in which case do you actually need a RIB at all?

We have a 9m cabin rib but she is heavily modified for Search and Rescue,

Gemini do options from new which are not as rugged with bigger windows.

Give me a shout and I can ping over photos to give you an idea if interested.

I'm slightly confused now. I hadn't come across anything negative about the Redbay Expedition until now. Does the cabin on the stormforce make that much difference to the handling? Presumably, this would be the case with all cabin ribs?

My Kids are 7, 5 and 2. Essentially I was looking for something that can take the ground (Harbour mooring), relatively cheap to run and as seaworthy as possible.
Not looking to go out in anything too rough but i'm not stupid enough to think that I can't get caught out.
I will be looking to travel between Jsy and the other Channel Islands and as far south as St Malo.
I have also considered Seaward and was tempted by a 29ft that has just sold.
Other options are Nord Star 24.
Speed is also an issue as I have odd working hours and on a fine day, would like to be able to nip over to France in the time I have available.
Any suggestions thoughts gratefully received as I am a complete novice!!

Hi Solent-Salted - yes, i'm interested in having a look.
I have looked on the Gemini website and the Africa Cabin rib looks great - however £99,000 ex VAT is too much and at that price there are a lot of options.

If you're wanting to take the ground, you'll need to look carefully at whether the outdrive leg(s) can be lifted high enough. Unless you can be sure it's soft mud for a foot deep you may be struggling. You wouldn't want to be putting half the weight of the boat onto the leg.

That has to be up there amongst the ugliest boats in the world
Also jet drive isn't everyone's cup of tea with lacklustre performance compared to a drive and none to easy close quarters manouvering
You would be unique in the marina though and taking the ground would be fine

Is that thing still doing the rounds? It's been for sale for yonks, it's definitely "niche"

Hi

I use , sell and source a lot of redbays and never been on a bad one. Until last year they would have also been my number 1 rib make by some way and there are pics of some that I have sourced / sold on my FB page.

My tip. take your time. they do come up and they take a bit of time to get the price right but you will love it. at 50k I would want an 8.4 not 7.4 and a 250+ engine. even better with yanmar ( dont get the petrol version!) inboard. If the boat is in Scotland or Ireland it will come witha good service history as most take theirs over to be checked so even a comercial used one would be well looked after.

deals can be done on these but check the leins on the boat if from ireland and do get the paperwork sorted. if you need help just pm me.

Dave

Another vote for Redbay. I bought a well used 7.4 with diesel inboard (Yamaha) a couple of years ago. Spent a few months doing a full refit, took all the seating and console off and added a cabin console. The result is a very rugged, dry, solid boat that two can weekend away in, or for day trips it provides a huge space for "stuff" and a portable camping loo. Lurcher on here had a large inboard Humber for some years. He traded it in for one of those sport fisher things when grand kids came along, he hated it and has since sold it and gone back to a proper boat with tubes. Stick with a decent RIB - Redbay all the way!

and me too .. have had a Redbay for a year and very happy with it. Its only a little one (6.5M) but is very stable when out and about, and nice and warm with a hood on it.
