5.5m rib wanted

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a rib with the following specs:

- 5.5m (or near as possible)
- deep v hull
- hypalon tubes
- with trailer

... but I'm afraid I don't have much of a budget so I'm looking for something inexpensive. I don't mind how old the boat and engine are providing they're in reasonable working order. I'm also based in the South West so would prefer to avoid boats in the far North East or Scotland unless there's a convenient meet-half-way delivery option.

I'm not too precious about brand but would rather - and please understand that this only reflects my lack of knowledge - avoid old Seariders as I'm concerned about the flooding hull and don't want to have to do any work on it.

Are there any boats out there?

Many thanks,

Paul

It would help if you gave us an indication of what your maximum budget is. Have you looked in the for sale section on here?

Sure have, Chris. I'm looking to a max of around £4k - like I say... not much of a budget so older boats are fine!

If your looking to spend 4k then it will need work, irrelevant if its a SR or not. if you could up your gain to 6k it would give you much better choice and less work.
Whats the issue with flooding hulls?

Search 'RIB' on Gumtree. A few 'nice cheap' ones on recently, the latest being a Tornado. Obviously you'll need to satisfy yourself it's all genuine. I managed to buy a nice Osprey Viper from there for a wee bit more than your budget, but not a lot. Worth every penny. Turns out it was a boat Whisper (on here) had owned previously so a bit of genuine history as well. Good luck.

We have this solid searider for sale. If a trailer is essential I am sure we can work something out.

Thank you all for your replies and to those of you who have sent me PMs. I have responded to a couple and have also checked Gumtree - thanks pilotwillie.

Re: the searider, I'm concerned about the long-term effect of seawater in inaccessible places; at the most simple level because of fouling in between the skins and running on from that water retention / osmosis / delamination. Again, I don't know anything about this so it may be complete rubbish... but neither do I know enough to be able to identify or remedy any issues that might exist.

If you keep a flooding hull Searider on a mooring then the hull will be full of water all the time, but if it's kept on a trailer the inside of the hull will be dry and have much more air circulation than a traditional hull with a drain bung.

Will the boat be stored afloat or ashore? If ashore I would not worry about it.

Fair point. Regrettably I'll probably be keeping it afloat the majority of the time. I also wouldn't know the history of an old boat with any confidence.

How about the osprey viper dive rib in the for sale section. It's within budget. I don't know that boat at all but it looks ok from the description and pictures.

My Humber Attaque 5.3 will be for sale in the spring, and when i get the top mounts on the outboard done. Don't know how much of a hurry you're in.

Elderly boat (1993) but it had a lot of work done by the previous owner. PM me for details if you want 'em.

I'm just starting the build on the McMillan "doner" rib. Regulars will know she is a ribtec 535 in need of some repairs. The basic hull and tubes, however are VGC and you should view the fact that the deck is coming up as a very good thing because we can inspect it all and put a new one down !!

This could be within budget on a trailer with the right engine.

You'd get a choice of layout too, as it'll be a bare boat soon enough.

I haven't measured, but I'm assuming 5.35m. She isn't a true deep V, but I've had one before and it punched well above its weight (length) in a chop.

I originally thought id be doing this for myself but my diesel rib project has arrived so I'm doing it to move it on before I start the next "proper" project...

Someone can probably link to the photos... I'm on my iPhone and haven't worked out how to do that not at the PC.

Out with budget by a couple of grand, and located west coast of Scotland. For the right boat you'll have to travel. Hopefully it's a one off journey anyway.

5.85mt - FAFB

You guys...

Spartacus, thanks for the link - not sure this is an ideal one for me I'm afraid.

Low Flyer, that would be spot on - just the kind of boat I'm looking for (plus a bit!). Sadly I can't stretch my budget that far. I'm looking for a boat to use as a coach boat for our sailing fleet over the winter so it's not even properly for pleasure use!

Does it have to be as big as 5.5 metres if it's going to be used for coaching?

You would get a very good Avon SR4 within budget. I know you are worried about the flooding hulls, but they can be easily blocked off if required, and for coaching the flooding hull is a big asset as it gives a really stable platform at rest and at displacement speeds. Southampton Watersports Activities Centre use a fleet of SR4's as coaching boats.

Thanks, Chris.

The 4m is fine for the coaching side of things but we found that it was a little small when carrying large marks with a few people on board to set up racing courses etc.
