just been thinking while having a cuppa, i just polished a stainless exhaust for a guy and the deal was he'd give me some cutters for my milling machine, which he did, ta!.
i was thinking of extending this barter system to you lot, while i have to earn some money i can easily trade what ever you guy's have to offer for what i do, for instance i need a scaffold around one of my chimney's and need it pointed, i need some fencing, an electric motor for one of my pillar drills and so on.
i have in return, as a lot of you know, all the facilities and know how to repair boats, for instance, for you guys it may be a problem lifting your engine off or out, or welding something that still attached to your boat or lift the whole boat off the trailer, for me it's simple.
i do realise that some of you boat on a budget and when things go wrong you can't alway's afford to get them fixed straight away, well i always need something done and i'm also a sucker for machinery of any kind from tractors to motorbikes and of course boaty bits.
i might be talking out of my arse but i do know a couple of guy's on here that will take this offer up and that's what got me thinking.

don't worry about that, i have a b275 international with all the other bits, 3 point fork lift, pto auger, rotavator, leaf collector, crane, loose box the whole 9 yds, 42 years old and still going well

i've got a good few years on the tractor, i was close to leaving school when the tractor was made
what type of stuff do you do with the machines

A great idea Biff. I am sure there is a good spread of knowledge and experience on here from sailors to solicitors and every thing between!! Is it worth a list of everyones 'skills' that could be referred to if anyone wanted to 'trade'. Clearly only those that are happy to put themselves up for it knowing how things can 'go wrong'. !!!!!

I know alot of people do stuff for nothing anyway and be good to give some 'payback'

If anyone needs an extra pair of hands I dont have a job and are always around!! Oh and know about a few 'things' too........

we would have to be gentlemen about it, it does lend itself to being abused, i will stick to my side of it and the work guarantee would be the same as always
just had er in doors tell me the upside is no money changes hands so my tax bill would be lower (what a wonderful thought)

Until Revenue get wind of it. They're not keen on Barter. I'd suggest keeping it under their radar, which means not running the op via a website. They're a bunch of sneaky barstewards.

I tried this (the barter system) with my workshop over here but in the end i had to stop as i found a lot of people seem to over-rate the value of their services.
The straw that broke the camel's back was a full rebuild of a Manitou telehandler engine for a local stonemason...spent 47hours doing it and in return got circa 22 hours of building work. And even then that was with me helping out by labouring! The problem was that the stonemason estimated his hourly rate at nearly twice the rate of a 'mechanic' ....'Mechanic?'....from that point on it was cash or cards only!

Anyway, as you say, its vital that both parties agree the value of the work to be undertaken beforehand otherwise, it invariably ends in tears...

Good luck with it though, i do hope you have success as when it works properly, it can be very benificial to both parties.

sorry for delay.
i work for a sign company, fabrication from stainless and ali also acrylic, pretty much can cut anything to be honest 1mm p/x to 50mm thick 316 plate,
