Yachtmaster Theory Online

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience/recommendations for online yachtmasters courses? I am currently stuck at home due to illness, and would like to undertake a course to keep me busy. I have done quite a lot of navigation theory in the past so I am confident about distance learning. Just wanted to know if there are any good/bad providers out there.

Hi,

I've been working abroad so took the online route. It seems that most of the providers use "navathome" as the underlying supplier, and the material is pretty good. I actually booked through First Sail Training, who had a good offer and were quite supportive throughout.

Like you, I wasn't worried about the navigation stuff, although it's always good to learn more. However, I found the meteorology hard work to learn from an online course, and would rather have had the opportunity to discuss some of those points in a classroom setting.

At the end of the day, it can't have been too bad as I passed!

That is really helpful. It does seem like all the courses use 'navathome'. I will just pick the one that looks like they offer the best support if you get stuck!

yep I did mine online when I was offshore.

Used Chichester maritime services and could not fault the course or feedback I believe they were the first people to offer this course.

Regardless of who you go with its worth doing and should help you take your mind off your Illness

The Navathome guy who's in Gib was my "tutor". I found it tough going and wasn't that confident but came away with a distinction so maybe it was just me!

Sure you'd get more from a classroom but doing it online serves a purpose and also means you can get stuck in if you have the time.

I offer through Nav At Home the course is very good
The hardest thing I find is getting my students to submit work.
You have to have discipline so I send quite a few nagging emails to get them to keep going .
If they get stuck I send more stuff to explain it or am on the end of a phone or email.

To be honest, if I was doing this again, I think I'd look for someone like Tim who's more "motor-biased". The course itself is already full of flappy-boat relevant stuff, so having a motor friendly tutor would be worth a lot!

+1 vote for Tim. Got to say that Tim is very approachable. His back-up would swing it for me.

Not done online but just passed offshore yachtmaster down in Southampton and a lot of theory was for wind assisted vessels so having a more motor based course sounds the business
