ok i know the power gains here are exaggeration and some things arnt worth doing. but has any1 here actually done modifications and had there car put on a rolling road and dyno tested, i for one do know a lot isnt worth it, but on a 1.6 focus standard zetec se it is 99 bhp a simple remap will only add 8 hp and a full exhaust only 12 hp, but things done properly can and do help and i dont think all youngsters should be tard with the same brush and be made to sound stupid, and on a 2.0 130hp tdci mondeo it can be re maped to get an extra 33bhp, i do know this is posible as my brother has the mondeo and i have the focus, both rolling road tested and confirmed on paper.. i dont agree on people being made to sound stupid.... and how about doel fins possibly not as effective on all boats but im sure many have noticed a big difference on heavy on the stern boat.

Yes actually I have built a few engines and had them dyno tested as I have been in the motor trade since 1977 and owned my own garage since 1986. I've built and modified a few dozen engines including porting heads,fitting oversize valves,overboring,camshaft changes,lightened flywheels,fuel injection, turbo charging etc.etc.
A properly modified engine of reasonable size can easily gain 50hp and appear unchanged externally.

so why word it so youngsters are stupid, i appreciate not every one knows what there doing but some do. i dont want to start a row, but being only 23 i thought it was a bit harsh

Best way to make a car go better is to add lightness
this was covered on junior mechanic of the year, basically the young mechanics had a small budget and a fixed time to make cars go better. the lad that won spent all his time stripping the car out and just serviced it.! The one that fitted a carlos fandango exhaust and air intake kit gained a few HP but made it slower on the 1/4 mile. Just proves BHP sells cars, Torque wins races. guess his induction kit sacrificed mid range torque for top end power.

Very true,years ago I used to build autograss cars,by the time you had stripped out all the trim and glass and skinned the doors,the car had risen about two inches on the suspension,the pile of bits removed was bloody heavy.

My post re youngsters and their cars was said in jest (although based on truth),not all of them are stupid by any means and those that are usually grow out of it.

And the reason you can do a "simple remap" and get X more HP out your Focstra / Vecdeo etc is because they have to be sold to both pass the EU emmissions regs, and also show a nice small number in the fuel consumption tests so they get free road tax & make you want to buy it.

Remapping the ECU will (and I describe this at a very basic level) re-tune it for power / torque instead of economy. Thing is your super clean diesel will end up doing it's impersonation of a Silver DB5 driven by a Mr Bond........

...and pass noise tests and have good driveability and start when it's -30C or +45C and have durable gearboxes (some engines are de-tuned to save the gearbox)...and so it goes on.

Yep, there's no such thing as a free lunch, you don't get something for nothing, etc, etc, etc But, brace yourself 9D280, the last time I (now we) made this point there was a queue of those who knew better. Allegedly
