Hi All,

Pay to attend a Rib Event in the Solent?

I am planning to put together a Rib Event (not race) in the Solent during May. The aim is to get as many ribs on the water and have an organised, fun day. My aim, for those that will ask the question, is to launch and promote my business, which involves Rib Charter, training, brokerage, event management etc etc I make no disguise of this and really want the event to go well (if it happens), my future might well depend on it. I would be looking at a charge of £35 a boat for the event and then laying on some food at cost i.e. Breakfast and/or BBQ at the end of the day. Let’s say £10 a head as a rough figure for both.

But would you come is the million pound question? Or am I just dreaming.

Your thoughts and comments are really helpful.

Would that £35 include use of slipway and changing rooms and somwhere secure to park the car and trailer?

Think you'll find an event just as you describe took place in the Solent on the 12th and 13th March.
No one to my knowledge paid for any more than their fuel plus food and drink.

the organisation was kindly donated for free by the Jackeens.

35 quid goes a long way in fuel.

Just my opinion, but my answer would be NO.

The event would have to be dependant on the weather, but a round robin event doing different tasks: slow speed, High speed, Nav etc etc but with a fun element. Trophies for different winners etc (provided by Rib compaines

)

Sorry no. It would be difficult to price for this as some will come from moorings and others will be from dry storage and others will arrive from different parts etc. I plan to have a start point and time (Insurance) and a finnish point and time. It is up to people to get there. i would however, like to sort something out discount wise with perhaps the local council etc but not confirmed.

Not sure why anybody that owns a rib would come and pay. We have taken part in loads of great and fun events over the past year or so with good people for free. Also should you not be paying us to help you launch your business?

Forgive my ignorance, but I can't see what your proposition is? or why? Do you have any more info that could sway the vote?

To have a day on the water with a difference. Yes you can go on the water the same as a yacht can but why do all those yachts pay to do Cowes week and all the other regattas? Why pay to go to Ribex? It goes on.
If you are happy on your own and others then you will not want to do events like this? If however, you are just doing the same thing all the time then this is something different. Yes there are others that put there time and effort into sorting out get togethers but do they challenge you and the others against different tasks. I take my hat off to those that do organise these days but are they insured to run these days as events? Where these events just a group of people getting together and having a good time or where they organised with different tasks and skills tested?

Where they insured. What was laid on etc Not knocking them at all but what if something had happened for example, would they have taken the rap.

As I said the aim is to have an organised event on the water with different fun activities. With hopefully the chance of winning something. If this is already happening in the Solent, then I have missed it and you can shoot me now

Hum,

Well I commend your positive attitude, to what seems like madness. However until we all see what's it about how can we really comment.

What I do know is:

I don't need my skills testing.
I can put together a packed lunch, find pub food or whatever.
We go out ribbing all year in all weather and the sea provides the challange.
There is never a shortage of people wanting to go out for company.
Paying to enter RIBEX seems an odd comparision.
Cant see the insurance point .. we are there at our own risk, own boats, own time, no fees being transacted, hence no duty of care.

Sorry to make you work for this one ... but your pitch lacks sparkle .. and this is the best audience to test your pitch out on.

Now a proposition for you .... lay the first one on for charity, half the joining fee, no prizes, take a small amount for food. The rest of the money goes to a good cause. Show us a good time and we may become return customers!

Hi SCM,

My view is good luck with your venture. However !

The issues regarding insurance on any event has been discussed in depth on here before. Hence the way we undertake are own get togethers. Each one of us is responsable for our own safety.

Insuring for an accident is one thing covering liability is a mine field.

From what I have read on the threads that took place over the easter, there were some pretty challenging situations for people to cope with.

I am not knocking what you are trying to do however, those poeple who enter sailing regatta's are competing in organised racing events.

When I organised the visit to Ribex last year we all had to pay to enter the "Boat Show". The other costs involved were for accomodation, berthing & food to attend the event. Even the prizes presented over the w/end were donated.

Not sure what it is you are trying to offer, perhaps some more precise details would help people make an informed descision. I for one will wait and see what transpires.

It's a good idea but i think you will get more takers if you made it a charity event eg RNLI people pay a entrance fee £20 ? it includes some food nibbles prizes ????? but whats left is donated ie £5 per person for nibbles £5 per person for prizes and £10 per person goes to the RNLI a disclaimer would need to be typed up to say the event organisers accept no responsibilty for loss damage accident or injury to participants during the event . If you need a hand give me a shout
