Winter project - radio controlled ( model) RIB

As its heading towards the end of the summer ( if it ever arrived ), I'm trying to think about things to keep me busy over the winter . ONe of these is to build a small ( ie model) Radio controled RIB, but I cant find or see any kind kit etc that is made by anyone - anyone ever seen or heard of somehting like this?

Really I want to make a mini version of my own boat as its somehting I used to be 'in to' as kid. Not sure if this should be here or in other forum.

I'm looking ( if it exisits ) for something with preformed tubes ( the hardest bit to make) and then use a scale OB on the back. Coudl put a scale jet driev in & a fake OB.

I'll take a look at the plans & see .

how about a home built one made from old plywood wardrobe and some bits of foam pipe lagging ,and a couple battery powered out boards from a cheap toy shop total cost £6.oop,just scaled up some photos and made the hull first from card to get the profile right then made the hull to the scale of the sponson diameter which is foam pipe lagging ,finished up making two one for my son and another for the local rnli fundraising branch its easier to fit it in a room or hall than the real thing , the two end cones were made from old rocket cones from bonfire night ,

That is awsome ! Thats exactly the sort of thing I would love to do to look like my own boat. What is the hull made out of ? That I think must be the hardest bit . Did you cover the pipe lagging with anything to give it a shiny surface?

To echo 'Nasher' Wow! you are wasteing your talents,Matt H and I were saying only the other day [Matt is a bit of a military model buff-usualy life size though!!]
there would be a market for scale models of popular [and maybe not so popular]R.I.Bs that you could possibely customise with things like tube colour,seating,ect to be a fair representation of your own craft.
I can imagine lots of R.I.B owners being seduced by a 2 foot version of thier,Scorpion,Osprey,Ribcraft,Searider...or whatever!!

So - if there is still a wooden hull around - why not get out the foam , make up a mold & start banging out hulls for a sensible price ? ( Either GRP - like the banana shark ones, or if someone has a resonable vacumm forming machine they could just be done over the wooden hull)I'd by 2 at least - then we can all go & buy some pipe lagging/ paint & have scale versions of out own boats- stick the bggest motor we can in them & race them ( much like the real ones ! )

Got to be someone on here who can make a few quid out of all of us by doing this ?

for the hull i just made up a dummy from card so that i could get the shapes right then made the hull from really thin ply wood from an old wardrobe ,with transom from a much thicker peice then all stuck together with glass fibre resin from a car shop ,i just used 2 formers or ribs to keep the shape of the hull and for the floor to fix to ,then gave the whole lot a couple of coats of old marine topside paint. first thing to do is see what foam or pipe that you are going to use for your sponsons then try scale the hull to fit ,just try experimenting with a small hull at first using card and selotape then that will give you some idea how to go on ,mine was a bit fiddlely more than a normal rib hull as the atlantic hull has a flat on the keel so that it can be run onto a beach .

just found my sons boat he plays with and a few more pics ,its looking a bit rough now ,the pipe lagging is 6cm diam and the boat length is 80 cm ,think the old y class needs a revamp too.might have a go at making a model of that next.

That's fantastic! I wish I had the time, patience and ability to make a model as good as that.

Somewhere at my Mum's I have the plans for a SIB - IIRC, the sponsons were 'real', made out of rubber (neoprene?) sheet. I can't remember how you were supposed to inflate them - next time we visit her I'll see if I can dig them out.

Unfortunately I never got very far with the build - pocket money didn't stretch that far, and by the time I had real money I had discovered motorcycles

My son was so excited when he saw your fantastic RNLI model and he has started making one this evening.He loves ribbing and model boats and wants to try and make a model rib.I'm not allowed to help so It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
