Barry Bonwitcos are brilliant boats. I had the 375 (12ft4ins) model with a 20hp Mariner/steering/remotes for a few years until I went over to a SIB. They perform really well even with modest outboards. Mine would easily make 26mph with 2 adults and 2 teens plus kit and 30mph 2 up. They are mostly not such a deep V as a RIB but far far better than a SIB when it gets choppy. You could keep to around 20mph in conditions that would see a SIB reduced to displacement speeds.

They seem well built and of course as you say have a double skin and good buoyancy reserves.

My gut feeling would be a 30-40hp might suit the 400 more.

Some videos of ours...

Hi Barry,
Kent Scouts have a With 400, its the yellow thing at Whitstable. Like Triggers broom, its had a few replacements but its still going, and tops off at about 30kn with a Yam F30.
It was bought second hand around 25 years ago. Not a bad investment.
They are good solid boats but you will find it a hard ride without much weight in the bow.

Tim.

I ran one with a 25. Not the quickest rib on the Clyde, but it could hack 20 knots no sweat.

For 2 up, it was better with a 30!

Hi Tim,

I know the boat well, I knew that it was a With but was unsure about the size.

It wasn't at all what I was aiming for, still not sure that I am. The price might be very attractive though, so it might make a decent winter project with a view to selling on in the summer.

I'll keep looking and selling bikes, that way the budget gets bigger

Barry
