Which RIB ?

A friend of mine, for only god knows what reason, wants to sell his 5.8m Tornado with 150hp Etec.

He's looking at buying either an Osprey or a Humber Ocean Pro (not sure what beam yet ?) of around 6.5m. What other choices would you recommend for going fast in bad weather conditions ? I should add that his play ground is the Raz de Sein and he doesn't like Humber Destroyers !

Thats a nasty piece of water to play in. I would want to be firmly sat in the Vipermax, just a superb secure and forgiving hull. His existing E Tec wouldn't be out of place on a 6.5m.

Redbay

Paablo

Check out the Redbay 6.5/650. Fantastic boats. I had one for some time before my current Redbay 7.5 and it was a fantadtic boat.Very strong and great sea keeping.

I come from a commercial fishing family on the west coast of Ireland. With the very rough seas of the atlantic we demand a lot from our boats. Redbay are based in the north of Ireland and supply a lot of boats for use in the rough atlantis and scottish waters. Rib Internationalhave a review of them somewhere on their website and they also praise them very highly.

/i have had the honour of twice breaking the windscreen on my 6.5 in extreme conditions and on both ocaisions the boat performed flawlessly.

Best of luck

We have a question. What are Vipermax like when stopped? Do the tubes touch the water? After all, this is to be a dive rib, albeit, a freedive (no bottles) rib.

Although with a load of diving gear on the back and perhaps a fat 4 stroke Lump It probably would.

My last rib dragged its tubes and I am glad this one doesn't it feels much better for it when on the move I love the way it handles

But we are spearfishermen so no heavy dive gear and anti four stroke (we both think that car engines are for cars, not boats)

Pablo, I think its a good thing if they don't touch especially if you leave you boat on the water for any length of time.

That wouldn't be the case. The boat needs to be stable when stopped for kitting up in rough water.

With divers onboard the tubes will touch the water. This is exactly the market the original Viper design was aimed at. Divers liked the hard nosed ribs but wanted more space and a stable platform at rest. So Osprey built the Viper range and brought it to market just as divers suddently decided they all wanted to go rib diving. Ospreys timing was perfect and they sold quite a few.

The XR24s were professionally designed to take a 1/2 tonne payload very quickly across water and clearly aimed at the sports boat market but served equally well running funny cigarettes into Gib. Perhaps launched a little ahead of there time when first revealed in Feb 92. None the less a good boat to go very quickly in.

However I have no idea what the current builder has planned for the design and its hardly time to launch a new business in the marine trade at the moment.

Even lightweight divers (I mean divers without bottles) ? We don't take much kit at a time and are never more than four to a boat. Spearfishing requires being very discreet, so no air cylinders, freediving only, and not more than a maximum of 4 in the water at one time (even 4 is too many).
