whats those pokey down bits

sorry for the picture, see the skeg like things on this avon?? WHat are they and anyone any experience in their pro/cons

I have always called them gullwings, they make the boat very stable and easy to control at low speeds and also makes the boat plain at lower speeds, they also make for quite a hard ride at speed.

A quick search for "doelfins" should bring up what your looking for.

Some (nearly all american) small boat owners swear by them. A few say that they find them positively dangerous on boats at 20knts+ but they undoubtably help with low speed planing by creating more stern lift. I am very surprised at that Avon having them, the engine looks a little too large to have them fitted, I thought that they were only fitted up to ~135hp because above they they are definitely unsafe because they cause the boat to be flighty and unstable in turns.

Like I said though, a quick search for "doelfins" will bring up all viewpoints

Eh, but I don't think he's talking about dolefins or other protusions on the antiventillation plate... (can't see in the pic - but don't seem obvious). I think he is referring to the shape of the hull - and the kind of "longitudinal steps" or "exagerated spray rail" type bits or the hull.

Oh yeah. I hadn't noticed them. No idea what they are. Maybe it's not an avon but one of those things that paul tilley had something to do with... forget the the name now though. Built in Ireland maybe? Sort of trimaran type thing, come up on eBay ever so often and sparks a discussion as to what it is?

As Polwart said its the hull I was talking about. The Gemini 6m a similar hull shape to the on in the pic. The reason the Avon are now producing these is because it isn’t really an Avon. Avon's are now Zodiac’s with Avon stamped on the tubes.

there were two at bhg marine.. the pokey down bits were probably 6" and maybe 2" wide at most. Built into the hull and smoothed in at they went forward by approx 1/2 the boat length. Ive never seen anything like it, and it appeared very un avon

If I recall they were introduced a few years ago on a certain model - maybe the 5.6 mor 6m ish Adventure hulls to give better handling/ turning charactersitics.

I recall taking to an owner of one who mentioned without them they were a bit 'slippy' in tight turns.

Defo genuine Avon (pre Zodiac) hulls.

DAM someone beat me too it. They are to give you extra stability in high speed turns and to improve straight line handeling.

DAM I had this idea 5 years ago even still got the drawings that I made so I could do this to my hull out of stainless steel. DAM ...

just seemed a good idea at the time. I was out skimming arround Dale and thought Hmmm what would make me take the turns better.

I have Two of these in the Dry Stack. Both genuine Avons, Both owners love them! Makes them difficult to pick up on the forks though - but we manage!
