Whats the lifespan of the average RIB?

Ok so heres a question. Whats the lifespan of an average RIB? Assuming that the boat is looked after, maintained etc etc how long will it all last? The fibreglass bit should last for ever ... or at least for 20-30years but what about the tubes? Do they eventually perish and start leaking? Anybody know? Or got any thoughts, opinions or experiences they'd care to share?

And yes I am assuming that its been built properly in the first place (and not all of 'em are!) and assuming that it foesn't get taken out into a Force 10 and have the c**p knocked out of it every weekend! Say average useage - 100hrs or so p.a.

Protect it from the UV sun's radiation and it will last more than 15 years. When I exchanged mine, the sales man could not beleive that she was 12 years old already.

I know what you mean. We have an all over cover for Yellow Tang which does the job. Left it off for a few weeks last year and the tubes faded quite badly, although a bit of inflatable boat cleaner and a lot of elbow grease soon got them looking spic and span again!

Any Rib with a Hypalon tube is the best option for the longest lifespan possible. Mainly due to the long-term serviceability of Hypalon.

All tubes will eventually fade with the UV; High pigment colours like Orange are the worst offenders.

as most RIBs have these, how long will they last? Is the fading purely cosmetic only or is it evidence of UV "damage" to the tubes which will ultimate lead in their failing?

Purely cosmetic, Hypalon’s colour pigment will eventually fade out but the fabric itself won’t actually degrade or loose it’s bonding strength.
