Last year, I towed this strange husband and wife team in their 8ft dinghy down the small roads and into St. Helier Harbour. He was just kicking back admiring the view whilst she was doing all the rowing. God knows where they came from or where they were heading. They were both in their sixties and I don't think they even thanked me.

Earlier this year, Jersey Coast Guard asked for help with an upturned yacht in the bay. These two guys had flipped their huge Hobie Cat and had been in the water for quite a while. By the time I reached them they were really cold and weren't thinking straight. They wanted me to tow them into a lee shore in what must have been a good Force six. I said no chance whatsoever and asked them to get in the rib and let me tow their boat to the marina. We then had a ten-minute argument about what was the right thing to do. By this time, other boats has arrived to help and all of us ended up shouting at the two guys to get out the water, which they eventually did. They had nothing on board: no radio, phone, rope, knife, flares or lifejackets. They didn't thank me either. If that's the sort of nonsense the RNLI have to tolerate then they all deserve medals.

but i guess that doesn't count cos I was on a tug. it was certainly the nicest tow ever much nicer to look at than a crane barge. We towed her from Portland to Milford.

We got the Master to hoist some sales and we got up to 11 knots at times.

On a rib it has to be one of those versadocks

I was on Tele ehrn we towed the old Mersey ferry back into Salcombe, but other tha kitten breaking wind not a lot happens there!

Apart from the gamut of busted boaties who seem to think I am a Coast Guard type, I once towed a 58' steel boat... that was towing a 48' steel boat... It was a little cumbersome to manoeuvre in the harbour. Fortunately it wasn't windy.

About 20 yrs back off the Malay peninsular about 5 miles off the southern point of Phuket Island found a broken down jet ski with a Swedish girl, late teens or early 20’s and wearing nothing but the tiniest of bikini bottoms. Certainly the other end of the spectrum from the ugliest things I have towed.

And oh before you ask no pictures sorry!

On an underwater harbor cleanup back when I had the achilles 14', I towed in a dishwasher held up with liftbags, and an old motorcycle of unknown vintage.

Most of the other big stuff was pulled up by crane, but they had repositioned on the other side of the wharf by the time we got these to the surface.

Tenacious was in Swansea a few weeks ago. Lovely looking ship but a bit too perfect close up - more like something from a film set than a working ship but I wouldn't say no!!!

Oddest thing I have towed was a palm tree complete with coconuts - unfortunately most of them were pretty rotten after crossing the Atlantic at 3kts!!!

Not quite as good - she was with her boyfriend aswell! On the phone to the CG - no freezer bag in view either .

Daftest tow-We found a fishfarm adrift one day and, having tried to find it's owner and failed, decided to tow it in to safe water and moor it up. not unusual you may say. but you try it for several miles in a 13ft dell quay open dory. took us ages.
The hovercraft comes a close second, ok so it was only a two man version but hey ho.

Prettiest tow- a 21yr old hottie in a kayak.

last thing i towed back in was a dead motor cruiser a few weeks ago with the s.i.b. and 8 hp engine from about half mile out to sea in 2 meter breaking waves ,,the pilot cutter came alongside to try give us some shelter in the rough bit ,,before that a 5 ton broken down fishing boat back to its mooring for a hundred yards or so after it had been towed in by the larger boat that couldent get closer owing to a low water tide ,

We once hear a radio call to CG from a 40ft yacht 15mile off Anglesey. Flat calm, no wind and sunny. Engine broken down.

We pulled it with a fishing boat maxing out at about 5mph all the way to Beaumaris and put it on a bouy so an engineer could look at it in the morning. It took us 3hours to get to shore then another 2 hours to Beaumaris.

In the morning the skipper of our boat went out and said, "so, what's the problem.....blah blah.. I take it you tried bleeding it?" "No, don't know how."

OMG they were delivering a yacht from America to Spain, brand new worth god knows how much and didn't know not only how to bleed an engine, but when it is likely to occur!

10 mins later they were on their way. What a waste of time. Though we did get a bottle of scotch out of it. I say we, i was a kid at the time.
