What do you log?

Just thinking about the new boat & things I'll do differently with a larger RIB in which we will venture further.

One of things I think I probably ought to be more diligent about is keeping a log - I never bothered with the Avon 4m as we tended to pootle about on the river or nip round to Torbay if it was flattish & we were feeling adventurous.

With larger boat, larger engine & planning to travel further, keeping a log will be more important, for noting engine hours, trip details etc.

I don't want to create War & Peace & this is leisure not commerical standard.

What information do others log, and is there a decent RIB orientated logbook about? I'm not impressed wirh RYA "G20 Powerboat logbook" it's more a personal log / vehicle for training as opposed to a boat log.

Hours, fuel used, average speed & a quick summary of the trip.

I just use an Excel spreadsheet. (makes calculating Fuel use easier!)

If you have a modern engine on your new boat you will have much of that info on the gauges anyway i would suspect.

For some of us with 'older' engines!! date, av revs, av speed, no of passengers, weather/sea conditions, voyage details and any other relavant comments like fuel added etc.
Hope that helps

As per Jambo above ^^^ with older engine i use an excel spreadsheet, date / time / fuel used / destination ( Torbay / Lyme bay area like you) / No. People / weather conditions / Tide etc, very easy to use once set up

I never logged anything , but the pictures from the days out are a good reminder !

I am however of thinking of the potential of taking the Avon to Bembridge for picnic in the summer ( but maybe not all the way on the water ! )

That's right. My E-Tec also has a telemetry link that uploads data to a PC when it's being looked at by the engineers. As for personal logs, I used to keep one when I had a yacht but got bored after a while and gave up. I guess that's why they invented video cameras.

I always imagined that you didn't so much log your travels as ravel your logs...

On the optimax we get a print out each year included with the bill (but no bill this year cheers Barrus) from when it is serviced. It shows the time spent at each band of revs, fuel used, total hours of use and all sorts of other mindless info. The most interesting part i found was the first one. The time spent at different revs. Most commonly we are at almost idle, or at revs of 3800,3900 (peak) 4000 and 4100. These are obviously cruising speeds. Secondarily it was interesting to see just how long we had spent at almost WOT

Back on topic, I spent many years logging all the dives I had made, and those log books did no more than sit in a drawer most of the time. To be honest I found writing them a pita.
For me the RIB is all about enjoyment, and if that stopped being the case I would sell it. So for me - log books no thanks, and if that screws up any future qualification efforts, I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
