Yes, yes. Great thread. More input from 'Havener' please. A senior position in the public sector health 'n safety industry awaits.

As for the guy Garfish, his posts are usually - no, should not be rude. He deserves post of the year award for his 'pool' post. Nice one.

Such a shame the first contribution to the debate couldn't be a useful one.

I'm no fan of Health n'safety for its usual role, that of jobs creation. However I do like to go out on a job and return with the same number of crew I left with.

Perhaps you should look at the record of well intentioned people entering floodwater to help others only not to return before making such fatuous comments.

What like this one?

"Just shown that to a couple of crew here who have been driving (big) water jets for years.

Reaction - laughter and much use of the word "knob" lol...

"We advise"... just who does this joker think... "

It's usually a weekly occurrence in the UK, and daily in the US.

Here is this weeks poor unfortunate.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...et/7137312.stm

It's very easy to find hundreds more.

It's a sobering thought when you realise that more people drown inland than at sea in the UK, and that until recently the biggest killer of emergency service personnel both here and in the States was water.

Flood / Swiftwater rescue is a relatively new concept, which as per usual took a number of fatalities before it was recognised. At least now it is beginning to be taken seriously, and emergency services and responders are training appropriately.

Sadly though, as with all things, there are a few diehards who believe that because they've got away with old techniques for years, there is no need to retrain. That's getting fewer and farther between though.

Unfortunately, the funding for RoSPA's collection of drowning statistics was pulled. They do have stats from 2003, but just nobody to process them.

Drowning stats in the UK are notoriously unreliable now. Besides from INREM, BEAREM, and SEAREM (which are vastly under-resourced, and under-reported... it's amazing how many rescue/lifeguard units are unaware of them) there are no centralised database... press-cuttings is basically the only method used for data collection.

Anyway, here are some good figures from 2002.

http://www.rospa.com/waterandleisure...statistics.htm

Havener.... I've sent you a PM.

Whiteminiman - PM replied to!

The best source of statistics is the Police / Fire Services, but it is a long winded job getting meaningful info together.

Matt - will be in touch when back in the UK end of next week.

I know this

Adjectives can be identified using a number of formal criteria. However, they typically describe an attribute of a noun

i.e Norty gArfie Cold Water

where as a Noun is a lady wot lives in a convent and don't get much
