I think the best advice i can give it take an evening course in welding and see if you get on with it first,
as that way you will get the best tuition on good equipment.
As your looking to weld both mild and stainless steel your going to need a good arc/tig set-up! But that don’t come cheap!
Here’s a pic of my welder, its small, portable, powerful, and both arc / tig.
But it was 1200 ten years ago so it's quite an investment.

oh and dont worry about the walk,
it'll come natural to you when a bit of red hot metal pops into your overalls!

I've done quite a lot of welding over the years, but only arc and oxy/acetylene. Never used TIG and only used MIG a few times. Rather than fork out 1200, my stainless jobs will continue to be 'contracted out' to the bloke down the road.

tried this welder today, it works but the on off switch is stuck at on, the last time i used it was a stainless exhaust in 2003, i have put some oil on the switch it may free up, it could also use a new torch, but its free if you want it, mark.

I have a tig welder high frequency does stainless british made and have only used it for about 6 hrs in new condition and it would be afordable if anyone is interested.I wont be able to post the details for a few days but let me know if anyones interested
