Virgin Ribber, looking for a days cruising, any recommendations?

Hi All,

Just got my first Rib!! Not sure where the places are to go for some cruising with no speed limit? Any recommendations for this Saturday, south west area ideally. Also any life/rib saving advice you can give me before we set off?

If your wiling to drive a little, Plymouth, Paignton and Salcombe, recommended as is Pembroke with Milford Haven, but doesn't Bristol have a huge network of Canals to explore ?

Thanks Pete, Paignton seems like a good choice, have you been there before if so how did you get on?

Any advice re. saftey would be much appreciated, as i am very green to all this, i've only been out once!

Well, Paignton was great apart from the weather going F6 just as we left the harbour, but very friendly harbour master and good slip into the protected harbour, dries a little at dead low water but its hard sand

Brixham and Torquay would make good destinations for lunch.

Whilst there is an extensive amount of safety equipment that can/needs to be taken it isn't confidential info so lets get the ball rolling.

Fistly have you got any thing at all!

Secondly do you know how to do pre launch/ pre voyage checks

thirdly are you trailing

Thirdly call the RNLI and ask for a free SEA safety check

Survival

Lifejackets for you and your Crew (get the person that sells em to you to show you how to use them and maintain them) Do not go on the water without them.

get a couple of space blankets in case they are needed

Spare Fuel and a refueling method.

Oars and a Boathook

Anchor, chain and warpand bucket

Communication VHF and a Mirror ( Helioscope) You can't rely on a mobile off shore

Charts electronic or Paper

Flare pack (Coastal will do as you shouldn't be going too far out to sea, yet!)

Clothing, layered clothing and waterproofs ( you may not need them when you start out , but it might get colder)

High protein food and lots of spare water .

training is also important, there's plenty of good trainers in Southampton, Plymouth Poole Salcombe IOW and a couple in Wales. If you let me know where you'd like to be trained I can point you at some good trainers.

Dave Hickman runs a good schooll in Torbay and I think he is quite reasonable.

if you need any of the stuff I've mentioned then list what it is and I'll tell you the best places (cheapest) to get it from

A CD makes a great signalling device - even has sighting hole in the middle....

Do you really mean high protein food? The body can survive for a very long time without protein (although it might not be particularly healthy to do so) I think you meant high energy (high carbohydrate) food. Although the infamous Dr Atkins might claim that we can survive on virtually no carbs, its not really true. At sea you need food that will give you energy to help keep you warm and alert, rather than protein which is used for muscle growth etc.

Personally I take Mars bars and Peanuts which comes under both categories!

This is a personal choice an I am not recomending it to anyone specially diabetics and people with a Nut Allergy, but I did really mean High Energy,

EXCELLENT ADVISE FROM EVERYONE AS USUAL HOW EVER

Please consider doing a course before setting out on any rib adventures or at the very least go in company with a more experienced boat and crew

I suggest you have a look at this web site

Its issued by BSAC and is very comprehensive, perhaps a little bit OTT but I rather have the kit and not need it than not have it and need it!

Best advice is to get yourself down to a RYA powerboat level 2 course and ask the centre if you can use your own boat for the course.
