Upholstery question

Does anybody have any experience in upholstering jockey seats?

Just looking for the basics and where to source materials from.

I looked at your post for a little while and thought I wasn't going to bother. Let me explain.
You pay for what you get and proper upholstery is worlds apart from basic that falls apart every year.
You can use ply for the base but make sure it dipped in resin.
Use dry fast foam as it doesn't hold water.
Stainless staples.
Proper stitching. Ie cricket ball or piped with proper twine.
If you want it to last do it properly

cheers for the reply, everything you have explained I have in hand apart from the stitching.

Not sure how the piping connects to the vinyl, does it have a flange to stitch to and will any decent sewing machine do the trick?

It's not worth the hassle of doing your own by the time you have all the bits, I got mine recovered only 4 backs and bases £120 at a chap that does motorbike seats.

Toomer and hayter. Now there's an old company. I used to deal with them must be 30 years ago. It's worth to know that they sell off roll ends etc at the boat jumbles

Does anyone know anyone who'll CNC cut ply for bases? (just redoing mine as the bases were rotting-me and woodwork don't go together)

most companys require a cad file from a drawing in dfx format
i use google sketchup its free and you draw to scale

use marine ply ( 7 ply ) not wbpand seal the wood with resin or epoxy

Zebedee Fabrics in Bournemouth buy up most of the end of roll Sunseeker fabrics and vinyls, and are excellent upholsterers, at a fair price.

Upholstery Fabrics, Curtain Fabrics items in Zebedee Fabrics store on eBay!

Cheers-15 minutes up the road from me too!

7 ply 12mm for the bases? The originals are 3 ply 12mm.

Most upholstery companies prefer to not have the panels resin or epoxy coated, as it's difficult to shoot the staples into, also, resin isn't waterproof. I always coat the wood in International alluminium yacht primer, although I also use Foamex for infill panels, and Vetus Polywood for load bearing panels.

Wow, cheers Nugent. I'll get measuring in a bit.

Dirk, I was planning on epoxy coating the bases with penetrating primer.
Is it likely to cause issues with fabric if I shoot the staples in while the primer is wet?

I'm thinking that if I do it that way, it'll seal the bases and the staples in so I shouldn't get any issues with the bases-hopefully ever....

if it works, its a great idea. Problem for me is that I have just spent the week coating my new bow seat plywood base in 4 coats of epoxy.

Use foamex bases and s/s staples. Sunseeker utilise this composition and I followed suit for my complete reupholster last month. Great material to work with light, strong, versatile and doesn't rot!!

I can get hold of 8ftx4ft sheets easily if you are interested.
