I wouldn't rate your chances if rescue depended on your average citizen noticing the flag was inverted. I suspect an upside down Union flag would merely serve to pinpoint the scene of the tragedy..

In days of yore when men were men & sheep were worried, it was a recognised signal in the Navy to fly the Union Jack upside down on a ship in distress. Sort of a secret-ish panic button when the sea Pikeys came calling

Confession Time... ...Is the union flag not symmetrical along its horizontal and vertical centre?

Second question... is a visiting boat flying the union flag as a courtesy flag therefore breaking the law?

A sentiment I've heard uttered before. Flying one in any position, height or orientation around my locality would also indicate that you are about to be in distress...
