Under age what chance???

I am 15 and want to race RIBs (namedly dads 6.5 Solent) but understandably dad is a tad nervous about huge insurance premiums let alone me killing myself. I have seen and read about the RYA youth championships but 5m SIBs doing precision parking doesn't appeal is there an alternative route? Maybe racing in slower boats such as the Tohatsu one designs which seem to congregate in Berthon rib pool? Yours sincerely Josh

The only type of racing for under 16s that I'm aware of is the K class racing. There is some info about it here and some of the racers post on Boatmad .

I wouldn't necessarily rule out the RYA Youth Championships as it will give you excellent boat handling skills which will stand you in good stead for racing! HTH

How many years have you been driving a boat for Josh? I most certainly wouldn't rule out K class either

The really bad news is you can forget having insurance when you're racing as well!

It's through the organisers only and only 3rd party - if your boat breaks - you pay!

Oh yeah warrenties tend to disapear in a puff of smoke as well!

It's not a regualar warrenty either - you pay an extra sum and they bring a spare moter along to the races for you and swap it as necessary - you don't pay - no spare!

You're right Daniel - it's not a youth class either!

That's not quite how it was "sold" when speaking to them at LBS but it does not supprise me.

I must say it all sounded rather attractive, about £20k (couple of season old boat, brand new engine) got you into racing with little else to spend, and sensiable risk - and you could use the boat easily for other stuff, very unlike many race boats.

Problem is/was the top-banana duo are both bad passengers and i don't think either would make good nagigators.

Certainly looked very exciting at Allhallows to see the younger peeps racing (and having heated discussions about who cut whom off etc. ).

One outfit looked particularly complicated & very polished (££££££££).

Hi josh when are you going to be 16 as i am 16 and about to start my first year of zapcat racing. I am aloud to race the boat as long as my co pilot is 18 or over. If your looking to really get into racing it mite be worth waiting to your 16 and look into the zapcat racing.

I picked up a 7 month old zapcat for a very good price and it was in very good condition. As long as you find the rite boat there is no problem with buying a second hand one.

Send me a private message if you want to chat about it.

I've seen several setting off from Lymington but what chance of finding a co-pilot......... Also do you have full insurance?

The chances of finding a co-pilot are pretty high

We were spectators en route home from a weekend in Kent. Allhallows was just a little detour to the north before we had to hit the M25. We had to stop to cheer on the Pompey Team 'Explosion'( Carl's Bakdraft).
We also met Geoff who used to race but does some nifty engine work nowadays.
And Silversurfer who was racing a Phantom ; he had a tough time with his engine tho'.

The Junior outfits looked like fun!

You cant get insurance that covers the boat in raceing but the RYA race license covers personal insurance now.

I have some good news for you and that is Zapcat have luanched a new race series targeting people like yourself. Its called the youth championship and allows people between the age of 14 and 17 to race in the same boats but with a 30hp tohatsu engine.

Ifyour intrested let me know and ill get you in contact with zapcat
