Tube cleaning....again

I know this has come up so many times but I've been doing a bit of tube cleaning today and it prompted me to post this.

There have been many products recommended but my expierience and the impression I get from the forum posts is that most of them either don't work or they require a considerable amount of elbow grease. I have, in the past, recommended standard thinners to wipe off the grime and hypalon haze but I got the impression it sounded, to some folk, too go to be true. So here's a wee pic of a strip which has simply been wiped over, no scrubbing necessary. It's the vertical bit.

Out of interest, the horizontal bit across the top was cleaned last June and it had Klear floor polish applied as a protection. It looks pretty well as good as it did when it was first applied. However, it has not been subjected to salt water. Don't ask me how come there are clean bits and dirty bits from last June!

so how do you get rid of sponge bobs mates that have been liveing on the under side of my rib tubes when the last owner left it on a mooring
for eighteen months i have lots of little back marks

i have tryed rib shine ibs cleaner elbow grease its not coming off yet

...........I'll give it a try, however, that just looks like surface dirt to me not hard, ground in filth following a winters lay up on the hard. Anyway, I'm sure it's a damn sight cheaper than the stuff I advise people to use at near enough £15 a litre.

Hi John,

That looks like a good result but forgive my ignorance, what exactly is standard thinners?

White spirit
Acetone
Meths
Petrol
Cellulose thinners
Toluoene (sp?)

I have used "RIB Revive" and had very good results - this smells a bit chemical so i guess has some type of solvent / thinners in it.

It's cellulose thinners. It is sometimes referred to a gun wash because that is the sort of general use is has. It can be used for spray painting if the weather is warm but it tends to bloom if the atmosphere is damp. I call it standard thinners because that's what it says in the tin.

It can be got from auto paint suppliers and some motorfactors. It usually costs me about 10 cwid something plus the vat for a 25ltr tin.

It has all sorts of uses: use with 60 grit to prepare hypalon for glueing, use to remove grease stains from clothing, use as a cleaning agent before painting or re-gelcoating your deck ( ), use for resin brush cleaning...I much prefer it to acetone, use to remove nail polish (), use to soften old paint and glue brushes, etc., etc.
