Treadmaster wear patches on PVC tubes?

Hi all,

Have got PVC wear patches on my PVC tubes, but find they get really slippery when wet. Additionally, the sheer in the bow means stepping into the bow of the boat can be a bit treacherous.

Anyone know of any reason why i can't use the standard PVC friendly adhesive (4202?) to stick a few Treadmaster wear patches onto my tubes? I can't see a problem personally, but just in case?

I know that Bogi put some on the tubes of my old Humber which is now living in Iceland. There were some photos on here but I can't find them, it might be worth contacting him.

I'm not sure how similar it is in composition, but I used Wickes own brand contact adhesive to stick the Hypalon wear patches to the tops of my tubes over two years ago, and they've not lifted at all.
I think it was under a tenner a litre.

I priced up the correct amount of 2-part Polymarine Hypalon glue, fell over, then when I picked myself up I decided to give the contact adhesive a try. I did make sure the surfaces were prepared really well though.

They are not structural and there is plenty of area so I'd give it a go.

I wouldve thought treadmaster was a bit inflexible to successfully glue to tubes? You can buy hypalon wear patches with a grippy diamond pattern on, maybe there's a PVC version available?

I would go for the non-slip fabric as mentioned above, just needs priming with hypalon before pvc glue is used.

Steve's Parker (250KTS) has very grippy paches on the tubes, it's made from sections of conveyor belt material I believe. I used to use something similar when I worked in a factory. It was called 'grip-top'. I remember where we got it from but can't remember how much it was. Anyway it's bloody effective on a RIB tube.

Andre or Steve told me it was done at the factory, but pretty easy to do at home me thinks.

These are factory fitted and are the same what Bogi put on Cypman's Humber.
Sorry but can't tell you where they come from

. These patches come with all Parker ribs

Do the RedBays have Treadmaster on the tubes?? It looks like it.... Really just want something grippy, hard wearing and preferably black that can be stuck to XS PVC tubes....?

Oh, and where to find the stuff!!

Some does but don't think it would be very good on the tubes. Glue would be much more hardwearing.

go onto ebay and type in RIB TUBE PAD,ive got a pvc rib and i might stick some on mine,i emailed the seller regarding glueing with 2 part pvc glue and he said shouldnt be a problem,

Are you sure your tubes are PVC? I thought XS used Polyurethane.

You are absolutely right and I have had a serious word with myself about lax use of terms - they are Polyurethane - NOT PVC.... Not the same thing at all.

Won't use the self adhesive Treadmaster pads as not sure what type of glue they use? Will check out some of the links provided here though - thanks everyone! Still intrigued as to what the Redbays use on their tubes though?

Hi Mike, as far as Redbay ribs they use treadmaster most of the time unless asked to use something else, but they use hypalon tubes all the time. I have stuck treadmaster to PVC tubes in the past with no problems at all, but have not done anything with Polyurethane before. Sorry couldn't be more helpful. R.

Just saying that the self adhesive one's would probably peel off the tubes pretty easily..

If it's a rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive (as most self-adhesive rubber things are), washing the adhesive with acetone before sticking it on will help.

I put some 4" x 16" x 1/4" diamond plate-patterned pads on the crown of the fender on my trailer a few years ago, and to my surprise, they're still firmly fixed there.

No suggestions about gluing to PU tubes, though, sorry.

A guy from Wing Inflatables (a manufacturer of PU tubesets) has been hanging out in the North American forum; might want to ask there?

The ones on ebay are wet/dry suit knee patches, they're very good for grip, very flexible for sticking and come with the first coat of adhesive already applied. Just watch that you're buying two of the lozenge shaped bits, not the rectangle they're glued onto. (If you look at the ebay picture this'll make sense.)
