This must be terrible for all concerned. Looks like he slipped on deck and fell into the water - possibly as they were tying up.

I assume he wasn't wearing a lifejacket but many people would have taken it off by then anyway.

Water temp was 4C - not going to last long in that!!!

Because it took two rescue crews 12hrs to find his body - per the BBC.

And if he'd been wearing his PDF, he'd be in hospital with hypothermia.

Talking to a guy last week, he almost lost his father recently in a similar accident on the Shannon system. Fell in between his cruiser and the bank, no PDF and couldn't get out but couldn't let go of the grass either. A mate saved him after he'd been there for 5 - 10 minutes.

I've seen a couple of people fall in like that in the summer from yachts.
It is scary how fast they went down after going in feet first. Luckily both were on busy pontoons and were pulled straight out again.

You can't really say that as nobody knows, if he had been wearing one and it was manual inflation did he bang his head on the way in etc etc

It's just very sad for anyone related the victim in these accidents

They won't, they'll just say what I think - Let 'em do what they want (you can't legislate for the Stupid and The Immortal). A few morts every year thins the the herd out. But everyone stepping onto my boat will be wearing a PDF, at the pontoon, where on the big 4.5m tides, we get a nice 1.5Kt current running out into the bay.

The type the vendors recommend for Pilots of light aircraft? Granted, his auto might have failed either. Or a gaint eel might have grabbed him. But I'll put my money on simply not wearing one - so many don't, especially at the bank/port, where, lets face it - what could possibly happen?

Yes. And on this Island, we have far too many of these every year, often on the lakes. The next 10 or so next season will be sad for the families too. Sad for the lads who have to fish them out. Sad the next lot don't learn from their tragic end.

I saw a guy fall into the Shannon 10 years ago, hit his head on the quay wall as he went in & was held under the hull by his lifejacket!!!!!!!!

Shit happens but theres no point inviting it, The water is never your friend it just kids you sometimes that it is. One shoul never be complacent about safety and always wear your Lifejacket (or whatever the trendy people call them) till you are away from the waters edge. I agree t is a tragedy but probably avoidable like most accidnts

Another one. There was a pic of the boat in today's paper. Looks like a 18' skiff. Given the proximity to a village, I am guessing they didn't have mobile phones either.

Bloody hell - some of the luckiest people around - just 1 dead - it could so easily have been all of them!!!

you only need a missing gas cartridge or a not fastned buckle for this to happen ,i once was involved in an incident with an angler that was washed off a pier, he was wearing a survival suit but he dident last more than 15 mins .
