An online petition for Mandatory Kill Cords has been started - apologies if this has already been posted

I bet that more than 3/4 of the 5000 are not boaters.

Matt, the paperwork that I have is not too specific. It is one of the CH7500 series, data sheet here. Seems an appropriate fitting to me

It appears to be a CH7552P, which has the optional trim/tilt switches and neutral interlock. TBH I bought it through Ribshop, who rigged it for me. I never did get my head around the various cable types and/or adapters required.
The only criticism I would make is that the cover screws are into plastic, and if you let some animal (NOT Kieron!) loose on them they are easy to strip. Not a big problem - and easy to sort.....

Thanks Ian-I'll have a good look at that. it's definitely something I'd rather have than not.

Agreed!! Should have to register your boat name, experience and qualifications to register!! Think the list would be much shorter!!

Now up to 28,000 +-supporters. Needs another 7000+- apparently? Not sure what happens then, does it then get discussed in Parliament?
It is one thing asking for an idea, but quite another implementing it. How will it be policed etc?

This came to me on Facebook, so it is now being seen by large numbers. I imagine it will hit its target shortly.

I wondered the same. I suppose people with no involvement with boats, but enjoy swimming off the beach in the sea / lake / river, have a vested interest in trying to make everything as safe as possible?

Nothing - its not the official parliamentary petitions site - the "target" is just a made up notional figure by the "owner of the petition". It just goes to show that you can get people to "sign" electronic petitions very easily.

This petition was started by the father of a man killed in an accident many years ago in Southampton and has a signature from --"I was in the first motorised boat to get to the Milligan family after their speedboat accident in Padstow estuary this weekend. We pulled Victoria and Amber out the water. The loss of life and injury would not have happened if a kill cord had been used." These are powerful images and people who have suffered.

I can see this petition getting to the first stage of a parliamentary discussion and if supported by any MPs we could see a bite at legislation. I know it will be unenforceable due to lack of resources , but the issue of neglect in any future incident could see this being turned on the helm in charge. So maybe not enforced but used later in the event of any incident or report.

If education does not work, you can guess what will come. As many ribnetters have said how do you get the many who ignore safety to change their habits?

If a helm was aware that if he wasn't wearing a killcord fitted to the boat & there was an accident the possibility of being found guilty of negligence provided that there wasn't a technical/mechanical failure may possibly encourage the more foolhardy to think about their actions in not bothering with what is in MY opinion a very simple safety device !! The fact is to me as obvious as wearing lifejackets when we go out.
I do NOT want blanket legislation to cover boating in any shape or form & once another government quango/department gets involved it'll end up as another expensive shambles but one prosecution for the negligent action of a helm in not wearing the killcord & resulting death/injuries would go a long way educating the less safety conscious who are out there (in my opinion)!

Believe it or not Nos.......i actually agree with you.

I "switched off" to this and similar threads some time ago now as quite frankly some of the replies were just getting silly.

Lets be honest here....as much as i agree with the drive to get people to wear their KC's, how often does this type of accident occur?

As tragic as the Padstow incident was, thankfully, its a very rare occurence.

I couldnt find accurate leisure boating statistics in the UK but over the pond, each year the USCG produce a very useful breakdown of accidents showing type of incident and casualty numbers.

I appreciate it refers to the US and should be taken only as a rough guide but here are a few of the more interesting statistics.

2012 saw a total of 651 fatalaties and only one of those was caused by a prop strike. Two were as a result of being struck by a vessel. These figures are somewhat ambiguous as it could for example refer to a boat (or boats) speeding through a swimming only zone. (incidentally, this is only 0.15% of deaths caused by prop strikes)

2011 saw 758 reported deaths with 5 being caused by prop strikes and 3 as a result of a vessel strike. (0.6% of deaths resulted from prop strikes)

2010 saw 672 deaths with one as a result of prop strikes and nil by vessel strikes. (0.14%)

Intrestingly, in 2012, more people lost their lives as a result of electrocution (2) and from slipping/falling whilst aboard (4) than by prop/vessel strikes.

As i said, these are US figures but based on the amout of people who take to the water over there, i would be surprised if the UK figures were any higher.

Perhaps its time for people to start putting the Padstow accident into perspective?
