Lets not judge a boat by its hatches! As we all know, every medium to large firm has its fair share of trainees and juniors, and they either won't have the experience or the concientousness that the old hands will to ensure the job is done to the best standard possible. Sadly there are too many people that treat their employment as a means to a pay packet and not a vocation these days.

If you were employing a trainee in a small boat building firm, what would you let them do. Lay up the hull, rig the engine, fit the tubes or fit a few hatches?

Any of those providing they were correctly trained and supervised! However its easy to point the finger at the trainee. I don't think there is any boatbuilder who can absolutely guarantee that there won't be someone who cuts a corner on a friday afternoon. What matters is how they deal with hiccups when they happen, and how they tighten their procedures going forward (e.g. keeping records of who fits hatches so a problem like this results in an arse kicking retraining; this would also mean you would know which other boats were fitted out by the same chancer so direct after sales activity there). I've seen the finishing on Ribcrafts and its generally a very high standard.

Nowadays there are so many materials that can replace wood. One of these is aluminum whose life is bigger and is much lighter. but

I Knew it, I bet that Ribcraft had an Etec engine. The Etec caused the plywood to rot :0. If the rib does not have an etec it must have been moored up to an Etec powered boat at some stage.

Not good for sure...but Pikey is on his Third Ribcraft!....and second NEW Build...if that means anything!?

This made me lol as it's exactly what I thought!
Our kids sailing club has 3 ribcraft and one ribtec the ribcraft are all still fine despite being left in the water 12 months of the year with minimal maintenance and getting hammered by all and sundry Inc teenage dinghy instructors

From being on the forum a while it does seem like due to the nature of the "small" rib manufacturing industry being so fluid, many makes have periods where build standards suffered. That seems to include many reputable brands that were owned by different people at different times.

As with everything, buying new or second hand requires significant investigation and ideally IMHO a marine surveyors report unless you are buying new enough for a warranty. Just like a car/house/plane/jewellery or any other asset worth more than you personally aren't arsed about!

It's not an old rib and very little use... It was also kept under dry storage space for a while - just poor design and negligence of the manufacturer can explain this...
