Yes I really enjoyed it - never thought of Griff as the nautical type though.

Yacht was stunning - a real old classic. My favourite line was when Rory went into the main control room at Dover coastguard and said "What a lovely view - you can even see the sea"!!!

F word

GRJ seemed to use the F word on Ch16 to coastguard plane. At best not very PC. Ilegal? Never mind the bad example. Nearly switched off after that but too good to miss the rest!

Yep, it is illegal.

It's also illegal to transmit to, or as, an unauthorised shore station - i.e. Griff on his balcony at the marina.

Apart from that a really enjoyable programme, although I did think GRJ came over as a thoroughly decent bloke, Dara as someone willing to learn, and Rory as an idiot.

OT - OK the thing with the radio was stupid. I did think it was wrong swearing on CH 16 but I am sure they would get away with it. Just out of interest how many other RIBS/Boats have had the Coastguard Plane sweep past them. (This also happened on Top Gear)

As for the balcony transmission. I think they would use a private channel for this.

I thought it was a great boat, but how much was this type of vessel?

I think you'll find that whilst it looked as though there was swearing over the VHF, illegal use of a shore station and "chance" encounters with spotter plane's etc, it was all staged for TV Makes the program much more entertaining.

Most TV programs have researchers that will or should do all the legal and practical leg work for the programms before they can be made.

After all, who wants to watch a program where everyone gets on, not very exciting!

would you not think this was some good PR for the coastguard? They got the chance to make some statements about how to behave wrt rules and crossings.

The beeping F* did catch my attention as well, but it adds to the reality aspect :-) In real life we are ofcouse much more polite.

Patrick - enjoyed the show from Belgium

Ps, I cannot download the show because I'm outside UK ....

Some researchers! Are you saying that researchers would have deliberatley mislead the production company, and the BBC to the extent that they would believe this behavoir to be acceptable?
If so, they should be fired. Maybe they have been!

First of all, these researchers rely upon info gained but various meens. Books, internet or physically going and have a chat with somone. Now I'm not saying their into is always correct (which it unfortunatly isn't all the time), but I would say that to make a program feel dramatic there is some deviation from the "rule" book and yes that does meen colourful words or bending the truth/facts.

When was the last time you went to the Cinema and watched a blockbuster film that was factually accurate? I bet never!

I quite agree that there is always room for some dramatic licence in a largely entertaining but informative format like '3 men'.

BUT.....ample other opprtunities were used for this purpose throughout the programme and there was no need to mislead the viewing public into thinking that it's ok to F and blind on VHF.

Ha, yes I quite agree. But VHF transmissions aren't allowed unless you've learnt how to use a VHF correctly and passed an exam. This teaches one what is acceptable accross the airwaves, so I can't see what is wrong with "swearing" aspect of the program in this case as anyone that has a legal right to use the VHF Marine bands will know or should know how to conduct themselves properly.

But I see where your comming from.

An intelligent idiot AFAIK. It takes someone fairly smart who can act the idiot on telly and get away with it. An idiot at the right times, and probably sensible when no one's looking or when it really counts.
