Guys that do boatstuff for a living tehd to think that safety, or more importantly survival, ain't a laughing matter! I think these links are very good.and maybe it should go into our refernece section.

Also for those of you interested the RNLI give away a free 'sea safety' bojlet with a lot more infor on a CD rom. We put copies into our soodents welcome packs and encourage them strongly to adopt the safety culture promoted by these publications.

Would you like me to send you a copy, Codders?

Already have it thanks!!!

Whilst I was joking with my comments I do think that in many cases what I said is true. As we have fast nimble craft not restricted by draft then - in most cases - we CAN just nip out of the way - it's very different for a yachtie or someone in a a slow displacement craft.

Dave's rules of survival
1) nobody else knows the rules
2) might is right even when he is wrong
3) the survivors of any collision are invariably on the bigger boat

Engine failure? fuel starvation? Electrical failure. Any of the 27 sensors in an Opti chucking the engine into Guardian mode (that would soon put you in a slow displacement craft) are some resons I can think of for folowing the colregs and not nipping in front.

If you have no respect for International Marine Law it's your call...... but don't justify your bad practices to others, please

whatever happens I hope you stay safe

Agree'

No point in being 'dead' right

Had the right of way once and a big RIB blasted away across my path.

Just backed off and lived.

Well, you did suggest that Colregs don't apply to RIBs which doesn't demonstrate a large amount of clue.

I think that they just don't share your "special" sense of humour. Try posting less and thinking more!

Not knowing how far the bulbous bow extends in front of the sheer bow you can see...

Had that happen to us with a jetski..came in so close, hit the bow which was just under water as we were laded, result...jetski stopped, occupant didn't..

'COMMON SENSE' is the major part of avioding a collision situation & all jokeing aside i would like to think that anyone that is posting on this site has plenty of it, as everytime they step aboard there R.I.B as a skipper they are not just risking there lives they risk the lives of countless others in the rescue services, if they dont then they should'ent be at sea at all. IE; If the other boat does'nt look like they know what they are doing then keep clear even if you are in the right, better to back down than try to prove a point & someone get hurt. Never argue with a bigger boat as YOU WILL LOOSE. I agree everyone should read the COl REG's it does'nt mean you cant still have fun, just safe fun.

Back to the original thread - I thought they were quite useful, realised I knew a lot more than I thought - although could do better.

I can see where cods coming from though, the colregs are there for us all to abide by for the safer navigation of us all, big and small, but the bigger the vessel the more responsibility one has. So i think as small powercraft we maybe feel less restricted to the code as say a 100 tonne commercial vessel that will not have the chance to quickly turn and change coarse if they lose there concentration.
