Sunglasses..
A great day out from whitby yesterday but I sat on my £15.00 glasses bought from a French supermarket 10 years ago . I new I wouldn't get value out of them .
Without going mad and trying not to look like something out of Miami vice what sunglasses would you lot recommend . It did take me an hour to learn how to blink when we got back last night !

If you refer to your plotter/sounder a lot then be cautious with Polaroids - sometimes they can make a screen unreadable. Equally, the "stronger" shades (Cats 3&4) can darken a screen so much that you can't see it. I've found that grey tinted Cat 2 glasses work well for me.

Never even thought of the chartplotter and yes as a beginner I use it a lot ? Are there boating specific brands and if so what is the difference

Don't get me on a mid life rant !! I don't mind paying a bit for quality but not for millions on marketing but on the same note I don't want to buy ones that don't protect me . Hence the thread .
So am I just looking for a cat rating when looking

Dunno, but my Gill Floatables with the built in strap are pretty good, specially at speed. Sub £40 if you look around online too.

dewalt make safety sunglasses - thats what i use. around a tenner a pair and have lenses big enough to keep the wind and spray out. at that price i have a few pairs.

I listened to a talk on sunglasses the other day and it made me think.
They were explaining the different levels of protection glasses offer and the general consensus was that anything under UV 400 protection was damaging to the eyes.
How they explained it was that the cheaper glasses that didn't offer the UV400 protection actually let your pupil open more due to the tint effect of the glasses but in turn this let even more harmful UV rays into the back of your eyes. Makes sense I suppose.

It does make sense and I guess I knew that this would probably the case . Who was the man doing the talk .. A sunglasses salesman !!!

He was an eye specialist, they didn't go in to any more detail.
It was on Radio 2 iirc.

The Gill polaroid glasses are pretty good. The lenses are quite dark but that is a good thing if you're out on the boat all day. I also have a pair of Oakley polaroid sunglasses which have a lighter, brownish tint.
BOTH work fine on the Garmin GPS / Depth sounder and on B&G race instruments.
Value for money - Gill rock!
