Suitable for the solent?

Hi Guys,

Do you think this would be suitable for light use in the solent,

Portsmouth to Southampton, Trip to Cowes from southampton ect?

http://www.piplers.co.uk/index.php?p...ct&prodid=3278

Thanks (:

i don't see why not, if you can get half way across the atlantic in a life raft you certainly can get around the solent in that

You could - and it would be fun jumping the beast but at £1700 with about a grand on an engine you could pick up a good size rib for the same money second hand.

I agree, I have done it with a smaller rib than that but got very wet. You will get there ok but it's not much fun in some thing that small on the solent chop

Thanks for the advice, I mainly want something so small as i have a small car to trail it and dont want to spend a fortune on petrol. Has anyone got any experience with the same or similar boat in the solent?

Regards

i've messed about in a boat that size, they're right you will get wet, it all comes down to how fast you want to go, in some cases even slow you're going to get wet, but these guys here most of the time want to go flat out, if you're open to suggestions, work out what you can store, tow, afford and buy the biggest you can, most of us guys started small and went bigger i don't know any that have gone the other way (that sounds almost rude but you know what i mean) we've sold small ribs to people and they want to trade up after a season in some cases, if you do what i suggest then you can't get any better by circumstance

Boats not much bigger than that have crossed from Southampton to the Channel Islands.

It's like anything else pick your day and you'll have great fun.

Seems a bit expensive to me.

Cheers

I would think that even with a very small car you could safely tow a 4m Avon SeaRider.

Crossed the Solent in a Mirror dinghy at 10 years old and a few years later in a canoe, should be fine, just a little slow!

You could get a good 4m Searider for that money and your car wouldn't have trouble towing it. You may not even need a braked trailer.

It wouldn't depreciate either...

I think you would be better getting any sort of inflatable or rib. Those Citroens don't float so well.

Quick look......

I just googled the C2 - the first random site I found is showing the tow weight unbraked as 450Kg, braked 530Kg (CHECK THIS IS CORRECT FOR YOUR MODEL!!!)

So, assuming an unbraked trailer is approx 150KG (light boat - light trailer) that gives you about 300 Kg to play with. I have a copy of the Tohatsu brchure on my PC, so I'll grab that as an example - the 4 stroke 25 is about 70Kg (shared lump with the 30, so slightly overweight for it's Hp), leaving you 230Kg for boat & fuel (more if you get a lighter 2- stroke)

A very quick filter of the spreadsheet I put together when investigating much the same as you are now (i.e would it fit the garage & could I tow it?), and the following ribs could be on your shopping list as they are under 200Kg: If you go braked then there's a couple more pop out the woodwork, but you also end up with a heavier trailer, so in reality don't actually end up being able to tow much more in the way of boat. A lighter engine also adds a couple.

Make Model Length kg
Avon Adventure 450 4.5 190
Humber Assault 4.3 4.3 190
Avon Adventure 400 4.05 130
Avon SR4M 4.05 159
Humber Assault 4.0 4 175
Menai 480SR 4.83 183
Menai 430SR 4.26 145
zodiac Pro 7 man 4.2 157
Rib-X Explorer 450 4.5 150

Beware the Assault - posts here imply it's not too great in a chop. The Attaque (the one that does handle chop) is 225Kg for the 5m.

I'll now retire out the way of the inevitable flurry of posts this quick rekky might generate........

I've seen a few of these small Ribs around Christchurch ( not quite the solent ) & they seem to fly ( literally ) with 20 -25 hp on them . I'd go for it but you will get wet & bounced around a fair bit from what I've seen - but for me thats what they are great at & you can get five in for slow tender type work . I found you can have much more 'fun' in a small Rib as a big one !

Dont suppose its possibe to get it on the roof ?
