Suffolk Rivers

I'm thinking of a trip to the Suffolk rivers when the weather gets a bit warmer. I have done a lot of sailing there, but a long time ago.

I am thinking of two or three days, launching at Levington or Felixstowe Ferry, or possibly Titchmarsh Marina. Any advice on these, or other good launching sites appreciated.

Also any advice on good stopping spots for ribs, with walk-ashore on the Orwell / Deben / Ore would be appreciated. I used to love places like Pin Mill, Ramsholt, Waldringfield, Woodbridge, Orford, Aldeburgh etc.

BIBOA used to do a smashing three day meet-up based at Levington , cruising to Southwold ( excellent stopping point for lunch ) in the North , up the Stour to Mistley and the Walton-on-Naze backwaters to the South . I don't believe anything is showing on their cruise calendar for this year as yet , but it may be worth enquiring ? Regards Bern .

Thanks Bern. Not come across BIBOA before. Their photo gallery looks a little intimidating. They all look like big powerful ribs [emoji33]

The cruise sounds good though. Loved Southwold, but very shallow entrance!

I do all my boating in the areas you mention in your first post and you have covered most of the best spots

The best place is on the Deben at the Waldingfield Maybush pub. You can just beech it next to the many dinghies. You need to check it every 20 - 30 mins because of the tide however.

Or go all the way to Woodbridge (Check tide times for the marina over the cill and radio the marina to see if they will let you have a birth for lunchtime. Again you will have to watch the tide here. Phone ahead to tidmill marina to book and check tide times etc

Look forward to seeing you in Suffolk Buckribster , as with you all these things are on my buket list but being fairly new I worry to much about procedure and not getting in anybodies way etc , one thing I do know is the maybush at waldingfield open for breakfast as well ,other things I hear about but have never done are , I believe you can enter Ipswich marina thru the lock for lots of choice for food drink etc , people go to Harwich for breakfast (this is moor in small harbour I think0 , the maybush at waldingfield is a beach stop however I think they may have a potoon there , ramshot have a all states of tide area and a dedicated harbour master but pub is not nescessarily open at lunch in the week till warmer weather (I will check and get harbourmasters number ) ,Mannigtree is the end of the stour for nav but its pretty shallow up there at low water . Orford is good for a landing on the beach again (slipway there as well but think its about £65 over 20 hp ) ,there are poss good stop offs heading up the ore for bbq or similar (well I don't think the National Trust warden would agree) but that's local hearsay , let me know if you want me to ask about anything local ,and I will be happy to help

Re Ipswich wet dock, I have a mate who's office has a view over this. Lucky ba****d!

I was trying to remember Ramsholt. Was there a quay there?

It would be good to meet up if you were around. Always nicer to go in company

Yes there is, this is also doable for Lunch etc if you time the tides right!

We did Sealand and the Deben on Saturday. The speed limit on the Deben kicks in from April but there are plenty of nice pubs in the area.

If you launch at Felixstowe and go round to the Deben be very careful of the tides as it cuts up very rough on the bar at the entrance. Doable but needs planning

Yes, I remember the fearsome bars on both the Deben and Ald.

The Felexstowe Ferry slipway is on the Deben. If you launch there to travel up the Deben no need to go near the bar. The tides and current are very strong though. This is my home ground and where I do 90 % of my boating.

This is when I went round from the Deben to the Ore last year

The Photo was at Ramsholt indeed.

Going over the bar was ok, just kept a close eye on the depth.

Anytime after 1 hr each side of low water should be ok but as stated just keep an eye on your depth finder
