The Churchill boats would do the 'step' up the Clyde which is trimmed down aft on the surface. 33 knots is more like the figure. We were desperate to get home and in those days you didn't have to wait for the armada of security boats. Happy days!

Once was on a sailing yacht up Scotland when we had a periscope pop up about 100 yards away behind us then it quickly disappeared , this happened randomly all afternoon with this submarine shadowing us , the yachts owner who had just recently left the Navy as an officer , started getting a bit miffed so decided to get the lump hammer from the tool box and bang out something on the hull , about 3 mins later the periscope popped back up changed course & we never saw it again .

Think yourself lucky that the scope didn't smash the boat as this has happened to a couple of boats around the Clyde. The famous drum owned by simon le Bon was one of them hit by the Olympus.
Sub sonar is awesome but rubbish at finding stuff bobbing or sailing on the surface so never assume they know you are there. As a precaution I always have 4 bottles of beer hanging off the stern to warn them of my presence........
