My grandfather flew them extensively for Coastal Command in WW2.

He used to go nuts if people called them seaplanes - always should be called a flying boat (The hull/ fuselage sits in the water - a sea plane has floats to keep the fuselage clear of the water)

As you say amazing bits of kit, huge lumbering things that fly so slowly for their size with amazing endurance. Not the 'prettiest' but built for the job they did.

Once dived on a sunken Catalina in the early 1980s off Cumbrea one of the small islands in the Clyde .

Bumped into a bit of an unfortunate Flying Boat today in the hills nearby...

Sunderland DW 110, while returning to it's base in Northern Ireland from anti submarine patrol over the North Atlantic on 31 January 1944, was too low and flew into the side of a hill at around 675m. One crewman survived to walk off the hill - his seven comrades were lost.

To the end To the end They Remain.

If I were him, I would have taken the backpack full of supplies and the walking sticks to help me down the hill

Very chilling stuff, imagine the nerve it took to fly in full fog knowing it was touch and go with your altitude, in hilly country. Hat's off to the boys. And they mostly were just that.
