Still a Virgin ;o( but not long now!

Well, some good news and bad news.

Couldn't pick up the boat as the trailer was rather, well how can I say it - I won't see the pictures and work out what is missing!

Good news

Well after a little heart ache - the garage (thank you spike) have pulled out all the stops and managed to get all the bits we need - basically all the mechanical bits and they will fit it on Monday (week).

What's money for anyway?

At the end of the day, we will end up with a new (machanically anyway) trailer.

The best bit is, that after spending that money, you dunk it in the sea and it all starts to rust to buggery again.

After our trailer rebuild, bearing in mind its a twin axle aswell, dry berthing doesn't seem like such a rip off.

Definitely, when things settle down a bit, I'll investigate these further.

I'm becoming an expert on trailer bits!!!

I've been servicing my trailer over the weekend.

last summer I converted my trailer to twin axles and fitted bearing savers to the new axles.

The trailer has been in the water about 30 times now and I am pleased to report no water ingress into the bearings at all.
I think for the first time ever a set of bearings will last me a second season.
Which is lucky because 4 sets of bearings are not cheap.

As for the brakes - different story, but now fully rebuilt and everything that can be is coated in hammerite.
My cables were also re-useable, which I put down to my bits of string holding the centres up. Any water that goes in runs out again rather than staying in the droop.

Nasher.

Hammerite, is that a good move? Wouldn't salt water get underneath the paint and acually make corrosion worse?

I'd have thought that some sort of wax oil or lanolin would be better. Even grease of somesorts.

Our brakes were a wreck too Nasher. But the bearings and brakes had lasted 2 seasons, just about!
Will try tying our cables up a bit higher, that could help.

Andy I have heard that before, however I went ahead and painted my steel diving cylinders with Hammerite anyway and then later an Aliminium clyinder. Seems to work well and the only rust on the clyinders after two years was were I had scratched the paint.

Just come across this site

http://www.trailertek.com/acatalog/indexcat1.html

Don't know what their prices are like but they seem to have everything you could ever need for trailers.

Fab site - thanks for this. We wanted to get a full spare wheel and were quoted £95.

By my reckoning, this site would make that £69.00 or less. The trailer wheels are quite big 185R14.

I wish I knew about this site before - nevermind, we couldn't have got the boat back home for us to fix the trailer anyway.

Sarah

Hi, I splashed out on a set of four from indespension themselves.
Total cost was about the same as a set of bearings.

Trailertek are very good, I've used them several times.
They are about twenty miles from me, but for what I needed it was worth the diesel money after considering their prices.
