Staining on Seats

I have just purchased a Ballistic 7.8 which is just over a year old. I noticed that the seats had slight pink stains on them. I sent the boat to be valet and they could not remove them and stated that the staining was caused by the foam inside the cushions. Has anyone else had a simular problem and is this something that should be sorted out under warranty.

Neil

It's been caused by the upholsterer using poor quality foam. Nothing will fix it, other than a re cover.

What about bleach - or I think you can get some vinyl dye.

Not sure what causes it - Dirk's probably right, but it happened on my 7.8 and it was straightforward to remove with bog standard vinyl cleaner, from Starbright if I remember rightly

I tried the starbright vinyl cleaner and it appeared to work well - I then tried fairy liquid and water and it was just as good - far more important is to use a stiff brush or nylon scourer - that's what does the work!!!

If the seats are white, you could try bleach, but once you remove the top dressing of the vinyl, it'll age very quickly, and constantly attract dirt.

Why not try fairy liquid it's much cheaper!!!

I tried the Starbrite vinyl shampoo and there was no difference - maybe some of the other starbrite cleaners will be different?

I recently read the "end of year" on the 7.8 ballistic from Hugo M. Swan who mentioned that the seats soak through the stitching. I suggest thus a recover and double turn the stitching on th eseats which act like a sponge through the original stiching. so worry about the wet arse and not the pink!!!

Any suggestions for removing fuel (2 stroke dyed pink) stains from decking (composite material similar to fibre-glass)?

I have contacted the manufacturers and they said that as the 12 month warranty ran out Oct 2006 they would not sort the problem out. For a rib that cost over £40,000 new I would have expected a lot higher quality and better customer service.

Reply to the above:

Ballistic said as the boat was used commercially, and commercially used boats only come with 1 years warranty, they would not be prepared to replace the upholstery FOC. However, they have said that they would be happy so supply new upholstery at COST. The boat is a 2005 boat, with the warranty expiring October 2006.

Sorry facts are important!!

Recreational boats have 3 years warranty on them

Obviously when you bought the boat you inspected it and bought on the condition / price) accordingly??

The boat was used for a year for rib training and clocked only 90 hrs use. In October 2006 it was then taken to your yard to be sold. The staining must have been present when it arrived at your yard within the 12 month guarantee. If it wasn't present then it must have occured whilst sitting in your yard. Either way I would expect the upholstery on a £40,000 to last longer that 12 months and 90 hrs use.

Neil, the Ballistic is my old RIB...the staining on the seats first appeared when in my ownership and I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that it came from red dye on the lifejackets and red foul weather kit that were stored under seat pods -it always came off using starbright vinyl cleaner and I'd be surprised if that doesnt do the trick again. IMHO, it doesnt sound like a warranty issue, just part of the pleasure of having a RIB with a light colour scheme.

Not sure about the paint issues with the outboard either, but did you notice these when you bought her? As with buying a car, when you notice "defects" you negotiate the price accordingly - I thought that given the price you paid for her, these factors had been taken into account.

Incidentally, I've always found the after sales support from JBT to be first class and when they can help you, they will.

Try swarfega or similar hand cleaner with grit in it.

Hi Neil, sorry, I thought you'd bought my Ballistic 7.8 that was on sale at JBT until last week.
