SR4's

I ve just spent both days this weekend out on my newly aquired SR4 (ex Nos4R2), and what a boat. Anyone contemplating an SR4 get out there and buy one, I should of a couple of years ago, think im going to hold onto this one for a long time. With the 50HP it really is the perfect package, its small enough to go in the corner of the garage, it can be launched by hand, can be towed by a Clio, its economical (I used a tank of fuel each day), and more to the point its rapid!
I rather embarresed some berk in apricot trousers on a binliner when I came past him with just the prop in the water at 38 knots!

Anyone who is contemplating an Avon SR4 and who is in and around the Christchuch im happy to take you for a spin, mines not for sale though.

Alex. Glad you're having serious fun with her. Its a little bit hairy sat on the back using the ropes as handles though

I think SR 4s should be considered as the best small RIB.

I Like to start an arguement !

With a fifty on the back they are pretty nifty

Just sold my SR4 with a 60hp 2 stroke . Have to agree with everthing said above . Kind of sorry I sold it now but onward and upwards ( as far as 5.4m
anyway ) .

Hi Alex interesting thread, just bought a sr4 which i am at present refurbishing i have a mooring at tuckton creek for when i have finished the refurb i have been out of boating for 20 years plus and i am just relearning the ropes i am totally unfamiliar with the christchurch area from a boating point of view .I have read that christchurch harbour and its approaches can be quite a challenge for the relativly rusty mariner i wonder if you could give me a ring for a quick chat thanks in advance

I will give you a ring either this evening or tommorow evening, im working at the moment.
May also be worth dropping a pm to Brian (posts here as ashbypower) has he runs his powerboat school from Christchurch and does own boat tuition, it would be a good way to brush up on your skills and learn the local area.

I've done that many times The worst bit with that boat was keeping the speed down when in company-it just wants to be opened up.

my mates were always really impressed with the acceleration of the sr4 even with the flooding hull, and ability to tunr on a six pence safely! top end is definitely a test on how big and brave your balls are! again depending on what prop you have, once upon a time I was swinging a 19incher!! treat it with respect tho you know what im saying

more detail?

I have seen several 4m Avons for sale...can anyone post a potted history so that I can tell what I am buying as I am quite interested in buying one.
For example...I have seen some with extra rubbing strake...
Do all 4m Avons have flooding hulls?
Can you convert (has anyone tried it) one of the 4m craft with the bow spray dodger, small windscreen and sit down seats into a centre console model? A lot of the 4m Avons I see advertised have v tired or patched tubes.
Is tube replacement easy? or expensive?
so many questions....!

Seariders do. Avon make other 4m ribs too.

YEs-the one I sold a few weeks ago I converted myself-see here. Make sure you price it up before attempting it-it can be expensive.

It can be expensive-but seariders with buggered tubes are cheap. They aren't if the tubes are good. Patches aren't a problem as long as they are properly applied, the right material and the general tube condition is good.
