SR4 on a tiller, good idea or not?

Got another SR4 and was thinking of having an open deck and tiller steer, the hull will be blocked off.
I noticed DHD said consoles were better but on my current SR4 I tend to get flung around alot, throttling back would cure this but then thats no fun. Had a go on my friends RIB with a lower console and didn't like it.
Any views?

Would have thought been sat on the deck meant less chance of falling out?

You'll sit on the tubes - if only to look cool ..... A tiller sat on the floor can be hard work ....

Look at the inshore rescue boats off the beaches .....all sat on tubes...

Max hp is down to 25hp IIRC when the SR4 is operated on a tiller.

Do you want to buy an Avon centre console?

I've already got a console ta!
So how bad would it be with a 50hp tiller?

Deep vee hull gives a fair degree of lean in turns, so you could chuck yourself out if you gave it some unexpected full lock during a bit of a 'moment'.
Should be a bit of a larf but I'd recommend using a killcord.

BTW, you can never have too many consoles.

You sure? I worked at an outdoor centre a few(!) years ago with yam 30s on tiller. Or is this a new Health & safety thing?

The one good thing is it's highly manoeverable, the down side is it is literlally a pain in the bum if you are out for any length of time........ The most interesting bit is getting on the plane as all the water sloshes back to the drain hole to join you & the engine!

Also make sure you have one with the steel transom braces - the fibreglass wedges give you nowhere to wedge your feet.

Not too long ago we used to use a 40HP Mariner with a tiller on an Avon 4m in the royal navy for diving operations. We sat on the tubes with no problems. Mind you it had a prop guard on & a kill cord.

It'll be getting a 50hp anyway, will have a kill cord and maybe a prop guard.

SR4fine on tiller

Chewy,
We always had our SR4 on a tiller steering (Merc 25) and it had excellent steering conditions, even on a 5 beaufort Norhtsea. The only thing you are going to notice, is that the tiller is quite far away when steering left arm, sitting on the right tube. No problem cruising, but full throttle at sea forces the driver to sit on the floor, which is not that bad, because the centerpoint of gravity lower along with that action.

When you decide to use the tiller setup, you should try to lift up the engine about 2cm (we put a little stainles steel beam between motorplate and bracket). This will probably ingrease full throttle handling, as it did with mine. We also made a flat aluminium build-in fuel tank, which we include into the bottom for more flat floor space and a better centre point of gravity (flooding hull holes closed of course). See the link for pictures

Good luck!
