Sr4, offset console or not

To fellow SR4 owners.

Just been chatting to Jonny H re offsetting my new jockey console to stbd. Is this vital only it's a bit difficult to offset on the deluxe moulded deck?

All of mine to date have been central and I think the balance has been pretty good, there is a tendency to land slightly portside first in certain conditions, especially if under acceleration! But you soon get used to how it runs in different sea states and on the whole the boat seems fairly well balanced.

Having said that, in my latest one I intend to offset the console to starboard to see how that goes....

The offset also makes for a bit extra room down the port side!

Hi,

Nick is right, the offset console gives you a bit of extra room. May be better balance too. Never tryed with central console.

My SR4, deluxe moulded deck, is equipped originally with that offset console. I think not so many were produced in that version.
There are nut´s moulded into the deck during the production, so you yust take the bolts to mount the console super easy.

May be there was a production line of the deluxe deck SR4´s, were those nut´s are moulded in every deluxe deck, before the order, if porn seats or jockey console, came in. My SR4 in made in 1990.

Here´s a pic of my deck. If yours looks like mine, may be you can figure out with an metal detector if you´ll find metal in your deck at the specific points, were you can see the bolt´s of my console.
If yes, i would scratch some grp off, to have a look if there are some hidden nuts. I really don´t know about that, but i would try.

Can't find hidden nuts and in any event, it's not an Avon console. I was intending to install it further forward than yours. The front flange touching the forward tank ridge. See the photos with the console sitting where I intend it to.

Are there any known issues regarding having it so far forward?

I had a heavy Valiant console mounted up forward and also a 12g fuel tank way up front. SR4 handled perfect like that on my setup. My console was not off set and it did tend to lean when airborne but it was no big deal.

SR4 runs best when well balanced, like every rib. How heavy´s your engine, how heavy are you, 1 persons, 2 persons.....? If too far out
of balance could be like an issue, but i don´t think that will happen, cause your position on your console isn´t much different than mine.
(Only seams much more different, cause original console front doesn´t touch the ground.)

More weight to the front she cuts waves smoother, rides smoother, more weight to the transom she goes faster, but some harder on choppy surface. You have to figure out wich kind of ride you prefer.

Technically, an airborne lean is banking. Maybe I'll fit some ailerons. lol

Engine is 125 kg, Mariner 50 hp, 2 stroke. Will have 2 sometimes 3 onboard.

my SR4 has console / twin jockey seat with 97l fuel tank, runs fine with two up and console is set centrally but engine is off set

Hi Chris, with that size of your fuel tank, and your Honda BF 50 consumption you´ll make round Ireland without any refill...

Max allowed engine weight on SR4 transom is approx 100 kilograms. Are you sure about the 125 kg weight of your 50 HP 2 stroke Mariner? Should´nt that be arround 100 kilograms?

With your console and 2-3 persons she´ll be well balanced.

The engine came with the boat. Mariner 50 3 cylinder Jey 2-stroke.

You are quite right. The weight quoted on the in the manufacturer's manual is 90.3 Kg.
