Speed limit at NE kyles of Bute - Clyde??

Is anyone who uses their boat in the clyde aware of an apparent "no wake zone" at top end of east kyle (between the ferry and narrows at burnt isle). There was some guy radioing every boat that passed that was causing a wash claiming this was a "no wake zone". Not sure how the ferry gets away with that...

I suspect it was someone from one the yachts on the moorings on east side but they never gave boat name (should have pulled him up for this :-) )

Fantastic day tho - great to finally see some daylight in the evenings!

Speed limit there? bollerks, he is probably getting sick of wearing his dinner when someone does irresponsibly horse it by colintraive in a big cruiser. If you've ever been on one of the mooring there, it can get turbulent.

I always slow down (I've been on both sides of the fence with this one).... a5.3 RC, you should give them him the prongs as you go by unless your really close to the moorings and I can't see you doing that

Was far enough away that I couldn't read that hotel advert written on the wall (ie a good bit away from moorings) - Ironic thing is, a RIB going full tilt probably makes less wake than one off the plane!

Exactly, as mentioned elsewhere on this forum.. Full Bung with only a couple of feet of hull and the drive leg in the water Ofcourse as a responsible Ribster we all slow down before the narrows though dont we?

It's been in place for about a year and was issued in a notice to mariners by Clydeport, along with some other navigational info like the Clyde North of the Cumbraes is regarded as a narrow channel and you cannot impede the passage of commercial vessels etc etc. Have a look in your marina for The Marine Leisure Guide or something like that that Clydeport Printed.
The no wash zone is from the Ferry slip to Buttock Point on the West Kyle. Most slow down there anyway............don't they Craig .

Yes .. Ive had the distinct impression of a dissaproving look from yachties as I've blasted past them at 50 knots up the East Kyle, the skipper standing there at the helm with his glass of chablis .. looking down his nose at us ! As if we were 'neds of the sea' so I thought hang on .... we need a decent sound system here. Now we can pump out a kilowatt of drum 'n bass as we pass hehe

This was no where near the no wash zone btw

I've pasted the current Clydeport notice about speed and wash below. Note that is does not specifically refer to the Burnt Island area, just the Clydeport area in general.

I'm always conscious of wake, but completely agree with previous comments that a RIB on the plane produces much less wake than one running at sub-planing speeds.


NOTICE TO MARINERS
03/07
SAFE SPEED
Mariners are advised that it is an offence to proceed at excessive speed where
damage, or risk of damage maybe caused by wash or displacement.
Caution should be exercised when passing harbours, piers, moorings, beaches,
recreational activities and any other areas involving property or persons.
Particular vigilance should be exercised when passing vessels alongside
piers, harbour walls or moorings.
Owners and operators of high speed RIB’s and PWC should be
particularly vigilant regarding their speed and the wash that can be
created. Such craft should be operated in a courteous manner with
consideration being given to other sailors.
This notice applies to all vessels navigating within the jurisdiction of Clydeport
Operations Ltd.

So there isn't a new no wash rule in the Kyles, it's just a general reminder to be courteous but it's specifically aimed at ribs and pcw skippers.

The only hooligans I ever see are the Jetskiers, we get them in Oban Bay now and again blatting around at 40knts + within the harbour.

Its the heavy draught gin palaces that do the damage,!! I was joking on my last post , but even with an 8.5 M .. I need to slow to accommodate those guys wash.. as I pass them

Wouldn't get too caught up in the vagueness of whether its a rule, a law or a recommendation........give it 2 weeks and Tony, Gordon & co in the big hoose next to the Thames or now that the foxes are safe, Jack & co in Embra will pass another bit of useless bureaucratic legislation to replace common sense, courtesy (and probably any existing legislation) !! and no doubt they'll give the MCA fixed penalty tickets to get at least £60 off every "offender" .................

I think we all agree the majority of water users are courteous & sensible & would not wish to cause distress, damage or upset to other water users.......including the Yellow Wellies!

PS Bigmuzz......... just in case you slowly pass any southern visitors with cloth engines, have some Jimmy Shand CD's which should have a good effect a one kilowatt output if you're interested LOL

Tried to find an online version of Leisre guide but haven't found it yet (if anyone knows if it exists, pls let me know). This is also referenced in notice to mariners - regulation of pleasure craft at http://www.clydeport.co.uk/index.php...=1&page_id=144 which is also copied below.

REGULATION OF YACHTS, POWER BOATS, RIB’s AND PWC’s
Persons in charge of vessels less than 20 metres L.O.A. are reminded that
whilst navigating within the waters under the jurisdiction of Clydeport
Operations Ltd., they shall not impede the passage of any vessel approaching
or leaving any piers, jetties or quays.
Further, no vessel or boat of any description shall be anchored, or moored to
either permanent or temporary moorings in such a position as to impede the
passage of any vessel approaching or leaving any pier, jetty or quay within the
area of jurisdiction of COL.
All users must observe the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at
Sea and have due regard to their position, speed, and effect of their wash on
other users, particularly in areas of high recreational activity.
Pleasure Craft users are advised to obtain a copy of ‘The Firth of Clyde Marine
Leisure Guide’ and familiarise themselves with the content. This useful guide
was published by Clydeport during the Spring of 2006 and can be obtained
from the publishers

As mentioned by various folks, common sense prevails! I had reduced speed considerably (and was well away from the moorings) when I got shouted at. I maintain that a yacht going at more than hull speed probably generates more wake than a RIB at full throttle. I guess the difference is a RIB generates a lot of spray so is more visible!
