Not waypoints but link to Thorness Bay.

My favourite place to go.

It has a large reef jutting out that catches the unwary. Many props worse for wear after crossing it. You can just make out the dark shadow in the water.

You can reach the beach on the other side (Holiday camp side) of this reef at mid to high tide, but if you stay beyond that, the reef is waiting for you and the land dries out completely. However on the 'Cowes' side of the reef you can come in at low tide carefully and step onto the reef. all smooth clay/sand with no obstructions below. Leave at anchor and wade in.

Best advice, as always, to watch a complete cycle of the tides to see what happens under the water, but always fun having the knowledge to then be more confident running up to the shore at any time.

Can you pick the spot you want from your charts? There are also lots of apps for smart phones and free software to go with chartplotters that will help.

Mark from Navionics app- Freshwater bay is 50 40.165N 1 30.616W

Not sure where you want in Thorness as bay is very wide.Anchoring on eastern side is shown as prohibited due to cable and pipeline

Not sure giving a single waypoint without knowing which direction the guy is coming from is a good idea. And I am not sure that asking for a couple of waypoints to go into a new harbour or anchorage is smart either. Its how accidents happen. Alan P

I read this as the OP just wanting a convenient/safe/permitted location to sling his hook, based on someone else's personal experience.

Use of the term "Waypoint" may be muddying the waters...

Thanks for the response. I guess it was a mixture of things - I did end up with the charts out and also firing up the Garmin at home - I wasn't on the boat !! I guess what I am lacking is a decent bit of (windows compatible) software at home capable of zooming in to the detail of the paper charts (my current software gives no real detail nor resolution) for route planning and quickly getting a co-ordinate.
Next question then - What software is best for route planning with the capability to easily drop a route onto a Garmin 750 ? Anybody got any recommendations. There seems a lot of software on offer but without some good advice, I fear a costly mistake. Answers on a postcard please !!

Cheers again,
Mark

Garmin Homeport. A bit esoteric, but once you get the hang of it it's straightforward for getting routes and waypoints onto your Garmin plotter. About £30-40 IIRC
