solent HOTSPOTS

ok guys offer up your gems. i'm looking to go fishing this friday in the solent vicinity and wanted to know the best spots. i'll be using mackerel strip for bait and would love to catch a bass or sea bream if possible. trouble is i don't know the best places to start. so any help would be greatly appreciated, just rough locations will do, or better still coordinates

I'm shooting over to Wooten Creek tomorrow and will stop to catch some Mackerel on the way back home. So will keep an eye out.

PS.....Not that I know of any particular place that is better than anywhere else. Most keep their spots secret, but I would try the area's marked on the map or drift langston entrance for the odd Bass or two if your lucky. Smoothound are plenty and Rays are starting to appear.

Give me a call on 77 at about 2 ish

Hi Lewy,

Try near the entrance to Cowes when the tide is in full flow - if you can see seagulls diving you'll probably catch something. I caught a 1kg Bass there 2 weeks ago with a simple spinner....

Also try the eastern edge of the channel, just at the drop, to the east of Calshot Spit lightbouy. There often seems to be quite a few fishing type boats there.

Yes thanks! Luke and Kev hadn't been on a RIB untill yesterday and they both texted to say it was the best afternoon they'd had for ages even though they didn't manage to catch any fish. Perhaps I have gained some further scurvy crew members.

I'm out again this afternoon with my Son. We might well try for some Bass somewhere.

me neither well apart from the missus, she caught 2 doggies!
fishing boats flying around all over the eastern solent yesterday, no one seemed to be catching anywhere!

thanks Hambleite for the cowes info, i'll try that next time we have big tides.

Hightower i didnt get as far as the forts as we were fishing first just off lee on solent and then tried just outside Ryde with either squid or ironically, strips of bass we found in the freezer. Then tried feathers all the way back to Southampton water. not one damn "macca", after that packed the rods up and went flat out all the way back to the Itchen jumping over the biggest bloody waves i could find

good luck today mate

Hurst (the solent side of the spit) is supposed to be good for bream. They love the mackeral but are a hard one to hook. If the meat is stripped off and the skin is left shredded, then you know its bream. Big bass (read monster if you're lucky) can be had on live joey's or mackeral head + guts between sconce and the needles and also in alum bay. Not tried myself but heard about it.

Sounds like you'll be heading mid to east solent but thought I'd let you know anyways...

Fish!

Just witnessed Hightower pull out some mackerel right in front of us ! Nothing on our boat of course ! It seems confidence pays off .He then casually announces he will go and catch some bass. No doubt we will be reading about that too!

Was nice to see you, I'm sorry you didn't get the chance of a mackerel! Sometimes if you motor around to Bembridge you will see the birds working.

Well, we had a semi successful day. Yes had a few Mackerel, they where very hit and miss. To think that last weekend two of us had 24 of the flappy things in 45 mins and yesterday only 4 was very dissapointing. Mind you I think the tide has to racing a bit to get a better result and would have been better an hour after high tide and it was a neap too.

After we left our hunting ground I headed for Gilkicker point. Found the area I wanted to fish by looking at the depth sounder and plonked the anchor down. This was a waste of time it turned out and with the tide rip all we ended up with was buckets of weed , so time to move on. We headed up to Lee-on-Solent but the water roughed up a little and I didn't want the little one getting uncomfortable so headed back and anchored off of Stokes Bay which was much easier to work. However this is more of a Smoothound area and with no crab baits on offer I'm afraid we drew a blank.

As we headed back we waved to Andre and his good lady just after they'd crossed to Ballast pile no doubt on there way home after a shopping trip to GunWharf

We were in Bembridge yesterday morning after spending the night on the beach there and as I waited for the tide I was watching a huge shoal of schoolies in the harbour, cursing that I didn't have a rod with me!

We didnt get afloat til late on Friday-but I bet we passed you at the forts Saturday. Didn't hear anything though but it's hard to hear the VHF over the engine unless it's offensively loud.

I was looking out for you.
