SOC UPDATES FROM SOC

I know there are several threads starting out there, and I will read all of them, BUT I will post all the news (and perhaps JK) as we find them out from the boat.
So mainly news rather than talk.

Hope that is fine with all.

We could use your help with any press cuttings, viedo and radio recordings as you see and hear them in various parts of the UK and the world- we have not enlisted the assistance of a press cutting agency, and do need a few people on the look out for materials published and broadcasted.

All your help is appreciated.
Address for posting is:

Nadia Lehmann
Spirit-of-Cardiff
PO BOX 401

Many thanks.

If anyone needs to speak to me about whatever, mobile 07811553925 on 24/7. Alternatively hm 02920220757 (but I will not be there much anyway!)
email: centre@spirit-of-cardiff.com

I am flying out to Gib on Thursday arvo from LGW and coming back Sunday night - late.

Anything you need me to take, post quickly to address above!

Will get some photos of GIB farewell.

Keep a window in your diary for the return party - early ish June!

SOC has had to slow down to 6-7 knots due to heavy head seas and 25 knot winds.

Slow progress

Tuesday 02nd April

Should be on the coast of Portugal by now, where they may stop for fuelling before heading on to Gib.

Managing to pick up speed and reaching 15-20 knots at some points.

Expected late afternoon tomorrow now.

The weather is getting warmer! and they are slowly getting used to life on board (having not been together like this since the Atlantic trip last year)

More soon.

Will see what I can do once they have left Gib, we will have them on a tracking system anyway.
Hope this helps.

03rd April 2002
07:30

Off the coast of Portugal.

They have had some major bad weather and its blown their autopilot, and thus have had to steer the boat manually - not always ideal!!!- I will be taking a new one with me tomorrow!!!

(if they had the storms , rain and lightning we had light night..........I thought the Tube was going to "blow" away!)

More soon,
N.

Really feel sorry for the guys actually having to STEER - whatever next!

(These are Ribsters after all arent they?)

Perhaps the Motto could be changed from:

'Driven by the Challenge'

to

'Driven by the Autopilot'

Hey,
Thought this thread was for updates, not chat and banter.
(but have met you now G, so...know what to expect huh!)

Batfalcon, they have a tracking system on board, via Marine Track, so once they leave Gib people can see where they are via the website - handy huh!
We will also know when they have stopped for a pint / cup of tea - just kidding.

Update: 03April 2002
20:30
Stopped to refuell in Lagos.
Two smashed windscreens - got a pici - JK, can you move from email to this forum pls. (when you get a chance)

Due to arrive in Gib lat, late, late.
All okay.
Have been eating mainly mars bars and peanuts!
(must remember to buy them a meal in Gib)

Take it easy.
More soon.

Here's the picture. They must have been walloped by quite a wave!

By the way, there is a new section on the Spirit of Cardiff site where Clives updates will be posted. It's at

www.spirit-of-cardiff.com/journal

Cheers

Michael

The site isn't quite there yet! As soon as it is live and working, I'll post the URL here. I was promised it for Sunday, but it looks like it won't actually be available until sometime next week.

Watch this space!

Ouch! Will it be possible to carry on? Such bad luck on just the first leg. I hope that they do not feel compelled to carry on. If it is not safe there is no disgrace in calling it off for the moment.

Bad news indeed!

One windshield, two auto pilots and now one outdrive, all out of commission. This is starting to sound like a Country & western song..."If I didn't have bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all". I sure hope their fortune takes a turn for the better.

Just checked the 'SoC site, no more news yet (07.10 hours 11/4/02). Any news on repairs yet Nadia?

This just goes to show that this is no mere 'jaunt'.

Keith, there is no way that they will quit unless there is absolutely no other option at all. The current round the world record is still beatable even if they have two weeks of unplanned stoppages

The new outdrive is being flown over to Malta - and should be with them this morning. Thanks go to Yamaha, Peters & May Shipping and Air Malta!

The people of Malta have been looking after the crew, and they have even been able to have a couple of nights R&R in a local hotel. They are keeping an eye out for an angry looking fisherman though . . .

There is more severe weather expected today, so they will probably take their time today and set off again tomorrow morning.
