small boat security

got a new small rib arriving soon and i wanted to make sure it won't be nicked of my mooring outside my house like my last one!!

Before they cut through security cable with bolt croppers and towed it off.

i have heard of security cable with built in alarm which might help. anybody have any experience with these or any better suggestions?

there's alot of them on ebay, which one did you get?

i guess the smallest and simplest would be better for me.

I haven't yet-it's on the list though.I was looking at the smallest and simplest ones too. I think whatever I do get will have to be put in a waterproof tub like the tesco food containers with a gasket round the rim.

someone told me they use them on motor bikes, so i guess they must be weather proofed and durable!

When I kept my boat on a river mooring (almost at the end of the garden) I used to chain it to the bollard.... But I also had a sneaky secret anchor that lived on the river bed, when I untied I clipped the chain to the bank and when I got back I padlocked it to a D ring on the transom.

The idea being that the light fingered boater would see the chain to the bollard and cut that, then think that life was fine and head off. The anchor chain would not be easily visible so they would tug and tug with little effect and eventually make so much noise that they would get edgy.

So what's to stop the theif from attacking the alarm unit with a sledge hammer before they cut the wire? They could wrap sound proof material around the alarm to subdue the noise of the Siren.

Much better to get everything insured and comply with the insurance policy in terms of wheel clamps, outboard locks and hitch locks.

got that too.....

i just want to make it as difficult as possible for these sort of people.

making claims on the insurance is a massive nuisance, not only all the form filling but the delays in getting paid, looking for a new boat and in future paying larger premiums for insurance.

i wonder how many boats on www.stolenboats.org.uk are ever found and returned to there original owners?

Does anyone know?

I think the Data Protection Act would probably mean that information wasn't released. Shame really as it'd be useful to know.

For harbour Watch we compiled some figures that included data from stolenboats, it made for quite depressing reading. One of the problems the marine industry faces is the lack of hard stats and indeed stolenboats itself suffers because they take data from several sources and often details of a theft do not reach the database until there is a fair chance the boat has been sold on.

As for recoveries, they vary a lot between type of craft, PWC and RIBs being the worst. We estimate recovery rates are between 0% and 6%, as I say depending on type.

We are trying to increase this by at least a factor of ten, by making form filling much more efficient and by communicating theft reports much much faster.

I am confident you will manage the bottom end of your range

, but equally sure you won't make the top end

The top end of 60% recovery for larger craft should be the easiest of all, the problem will be getting people to use our One Form to record the small and usually unique details - the rest is just a simple matter of getting the info out accurately and quickly to a large circulation.

There is a level of apathy with the owners of larger boats, people tell us their boat has never been nicked and will never be nicked so they have no drive to spend an hour noting down every detail.

My RIB lives on it's trailer behind my house, but we are away for long periods of time. I use a wheel lock, a chain around tree and a hitch lock. I also own a Zip-saw and bolt-cutters, which would allow me to free my boat in less than 5 minutes if I lost my key ring!

All the locks and alarms in the world won't keep a "real" thief from stealing your boat. They might keep the "opportunitistic thief" at bay as he won't have the tools with him. It wil also maybe keep drunken adolescent holigans from snitching it.

And I expect the insurance claim goes a little easier when you can honestly say you have done everything you can to keep you boat yours!

A friend of mine lost a 60' charter boat to drunken joy-riders who then ran her aground. The repairs were more costly than the insured value of the boat however and my friend is now in a new line of work...

and they were brilliant.
the first one sent stopped working the following day and when i rang the manufacturer for help they said someone would call me but never did.Meanwhile i emailed the Everything_Direct1 sellers and without asking put a replacement in the post the same day without any additional charge. Nor did they ask for the faulty one back. I call that good service!. In passing i rang the manufacturer again and sent them an email but never got a reply even once.

I've now had the cable lock for some weeks now and it seems to work perfectly and hopefully it will put off potential theiving scum bags!

make sure you order the right cable length for your requirement.

Yes but you could wire the alarm to the mains with a 30 amp fuse no a 6" nail in the fuse box might stun a few fish as well

but your right if there gonna nick it there's not much you can do about it. just a thought what about a security camera from your house at least the police might have something to go on.
