Size.

Hi folks,
Apart from the obvious quips about "Does size matter?", I have noticed that most of the poeple on the forum have ribs of up to about 7 metres (or have I misread?).
Obviously, it is a question of cost, but why no bigger? Is the larger boat less safe, less manageable?
Why not a ten metre for example? Especially as some waters that people talk about travelling into, around the Channel Islands, for instance, would tend to call for max. safety.

How much safer would a 10 metree be, and would you buy one if you could?
Of course, would be a problem to trailer.

Mine is a Scorpion 7.5 that's more than 8 meters incl. the engine. The width is 2,62 meters. I can tow it easily around on the trailer. On the water she's in her element with her length.
If she would be longer (and wider) she would be hard to travel around with on land. On the water 8 to 10 meters would be nicer

Think of it like an Aston Martin and a Lotus Elise. The Aston would be quicker on some roads - on others the Elise would hammer it. The Elise would also be a lot cheaper to run but given a choice which would most people go for???

Does make you wonder why sometimes though.......

Obviously a bigger boat will usually cope with bigger waves but a lot depends on the hull as well. My 8.8m will bash through waves that have smaller RIBs airborne all the time - for me to get as much fun as them I need bigger waves!!!

A curiosity? Why did you blank out the make of your boat - your post would stimulate one to ask what you use to get your kicks.

You don't happen to know Jason or Dominic do you? The reason I have put BLANK is because the boat builder didn't bother to put his name on the boat. it could be because he has sold the company. The make should be Prosport - yes it was made in Guernsey........

i would say its mainly cost, but the bigger the boat, the trickier to transport, the larger more powerful tow vehicle required, increased fuel costs both for tow vehicle and boat itself. so i suppose ultimately its all money, as if we could afford a much bigger boat, and justify it then we would get one, but as it is a 6.3m humber is nicely matched to us and our nissan x trail, if we went bigger, we would have to consider a beefier vehicle like a discovery...

I'll have to drop in at Prosport next time I am on Guernsey. No, I don't know Dominic or Jason, although would be nice to ask them if they know anyone who does chartering trips from mainland France to Guernsey and/or Sark, as I have been getting some hefty quotes from those who advertise on the net.

I go quite regularly and it is getting damned expensive. Am even thinking of looking at chartering courses (mainly to get better acquinted with the waters as the rocks and currents can be treacherous) and doing the trip myself. Do you know of any in Guernsey?

Prosport have been sold - they now operate from UK mainland.

Don't know about chartering - there are a few on Guernsey who post on here.

You could try keeping your eye open for a big orange Quinquari passenger RIB operating out of St Peter Port - they MAY also do charters.
