Sinking floats

While dithering around the garage yesterday after a quick round the island ( Brownsea Island ) trip in the Bombard I thought that the float gauge in the hulk 22l tank has never worked. So i unscrewed it and the float just sinks !

Is this just due to it being cheap/ crap nylon or has the 2stroke oil changed the density of the petrol so it sinks or something else ?

I dont really look at the gauge as I can see petrol sloshing about through the tank itself - but any reason why I cant replace it with a handy cork or two from last weekends wine drinking session ?

I assume the plastic float is supposed to be filled with air? Probably not going to be more dense than oil/gas when it's working correctly. Most likely it's cracked or otherwise leaking, and filling up with whatever it's supposed to ride on top of.

Don't see why cork wouldn't work, but I would give a bunch of coats of some sort of oil/fuel resistant coating to keep it from falling apart and clogging the fuel system downstream.

Then again, it may be cheaper in the long run to simply replace the sender. They're rarely usable when you're running; if you have a good view of the fuel level, would be even cheaper to get rid of it altogether.

All my sinks have holes in them, but I reckon only Biff has a boat thats supposed to have a sink when its floating.

My sink is supposed to float, but my float is solid - with no holes that are making it sink, so it should float the same as the rest of my 'faulty' sinks that float !

The old tank floats were cork so I don't see a problem,
Just goes to show though last week our domestic clothing dryer stopped working ,, took it apart and found that the foam float on the micro switch that then operates the pump to drain out condensed water into the holding tank was that much water logged I thought that perhaps it had some balance wright moulded in it. Bit of old polystyrene and now good as new.
