Serial number on outboard

Hi I looked at an outboard to buy today but the serial no sticker was missing. The vendor said it just came off after time and he seemed genuine enough and I have had outboards before where the sticker was half unstuck. So question is

Sorry sent halfway through typing!!
Question is where else can the serial no be found on an outboard surely it is not just on the sticker? I looked at my engine and it has a disc in the block but that number is different to the serial no on my sticker. Thanks in advance if you can answer this one.

Where and how depends on the motor. if its an ETEC the S/N will be on the 1)Transom saddle sticker 2) On stamped disk recessed into the block 3) Held on the ECU of the motor - all three should match 100%. If the block doesnt match the saddle or the ECU it could have had a second hand part swapped or perhaps its stolen.

Check stolenboats.org with any SN you have carefully.

I know 2005 Yams were sticker only (at least as far as I've seen on mine.)

NO serial number , Dont buy. Because the serial number could/will be required to make sure any spares you may/have to buy are the correct ones for that obm. But sometimes there are alot of common parts fitted to various hp sizes of obms.Mer/mar have/used to have two s/ns, one was for the build, and the other was for useing in the eu.I used to remove the build sticker to make life easyer.

If the numbers all tally (apart from 'OT') I wouldn't worry.

If some / all are missing dig deeper or move on.

Sticker fell off my 4hp Yamaha.

Was there when I bought it. Couple of months later was gone

It does happen unfortunately.
