Seat pads

I got a firm price for two small single jockey pads from Mastertrim, boy did I get a fright! Over £200 for two 35 x 25 cm pads! this includes delivery but still!
Surely there must be somewhere that can make them at a bit more reasonable price?

failing that what materials and method is usually used to construct the pads? I may talk to our upholsterer but would ned to be able to get the materials etc

Owen Sails at Benderloch, have loads of the jockey seat shaped foam in stock. They'll probably make up the upholstery, as that's what they do. To give you an idea of costs of materials, the new piece of closed cell foam for my aft bench seat, plus the white vinyl stuff to cover it, came to just over £50.

I would definitely call in on them. They are very helpful.

Why not make them yourself ? I have just done 5 seats and backrests. Cost £70 in materials and a few evenings sewing

I have access to a tame upholsterer who would probably do the job for a bottle or two but would need to provide the materials and method as he doesn't know anything about marine upholstery.
What would I need and how would it be put together?

I had Esteem Marine here in Poole make a couple of new seat pads: one was for a double bench seat the other a double jockey. Cost 125

Still not as cheap as Mr 7's option but better than the cost you'd been offered. Let me know if you need their number

Bruce you can buy the materials from here or a good sail maker. You make the seat bases to your size and give him the foam and cover material and let him do the rest. Suggest a thickness of 5" for jockey seat bases. some firms rap the foam in platic sheet to try and keep the water out, but I am not convinced and prefer a 1 inch hole under the seat to drain it instead.

Seat bases were ordinary ply, doesn't have to be anything special with edges and corners sanded and then painted. Covers sewn and the cover then glued with evostick to the base. I made the seats on Old Spice 5 years ago and whilst they could now do with new covers they have lasted well.

I made a new set of cockpit floorboards for a boat a few years ago with decent WBP and used 3 coats of garage concrete floor paint to seal them. Worked well and the floor paint is cheap as chips if you wanted to use it to seal a wooden seat base.

All the seats in The Nashers Revenge are all home made as well.

Plywood bases, sanded and varnished, half cylinder section foam pads for the jockeys, and 4 inch closed cell foam for the bench base and back.

All covered in Grey vinyl by myself with Mrs Nashers help.

Total cost was under £100

Still going strong after 3 years and look almost as good as the pro's do.

Mastertrim must have put their prices up a lot since last winter then. I had 4 seat bases, 4 backrests, console front cushion, anchor locker cushion, rear bench cushions all for just over £400. Maybe Loui added mine up wrong and is now trying to recoup his losses

He wanted £500 from me to do 4 pods (cushions & backrests) and a front seat cushion, so I declined his kind offer

and had a local guy do them instead for a lot less.

I am probably going to look into getting them made by the works upholsterer. If I buy the materials and cut the wood I am sure it will cost m no more than a bottle of something nice to get them made.
I did call Owen sails but they didn't return my call.......

That's why the workshop is full of half round jockey seat foam then.
