Hi,

I have a SR5.4, I want to block the flooding hull and fit trunks. With this setup will the trunks let water in when sat on a mooring.
Obviously they will let the rain water out but how much if any of the deck will end up flooded?

my flooding hull is blocked off, The elephant trunks are well under water when at rest. i couldnt say exactly how much, beacuse last time i looked over the transom at rest two of us were right in the back of the boat trying to pump water out, and our combined weight made it pour in over the transom

but when i had one leaking the boat would fill with water.
At guess i would say if you left one down you may end up with 4" or more in the boat depending on how much fuel you have on board.
i will have a look next time its in the water, if you havent found out by then.
I think the answer is trunks up and a bilge pump.

It wouldn't matter how many trunks were down would it as when it got to the 4" it would stop, it would just they twice as quick?

My boat will dry out at low water so my theory was any water would drain out then? If I leave the trunks up all the time it won't drain at all?

My 5.4 had the flooding section open.

With the trunk down it floods almost to the engine cut out on the transom. had a 90hp 2 stroke on the back.

Bilge pump.

the water probably wont run out the trunks when it dries. When my boat is on the trailer it can get full of rain water with the trunks down unless you wedge a piece of wood up them to stop them hanging down and folding shut.
i think you have a choice either trunks down and a boat full of seawater or trunks up and a boat full of rain, the third possibility is a bilge pump, dry boat and a flat battery

maybe a cover to keep the rain out would help?

A cover would be the best and easiest option but a pain as I leave my boat on a mooring.

Just had a quick search and some had an elephants that was effectively slit down either side and and reglued so the flats stuck together stopping water entering. Anyone had any success with these?

After I had my transom rebuilt I had one of these fitted to replace the home made trunk.

Worked a treat - but the boat lived on a trailer. Not sure how it would be with a few barnacles inside?

Those were mine. Whilst effective for short-medium term use in the water, I think if a boat lived on a mooring with those it would still have filled up over time. I wonder if attaching a ping-pong ball or similar to the end of the trunk would work - it would float just about the surface when at rest, but would allow the boat to drain when underway.

I did think about attaching a cork or something on the end like you mentioned. I think it'll be trial and error.

The other thing I need to look at is a cover for the boat as this would sort the problem easily.

Do they leak whislt under water. Whats the max length of time your boat is left in the water?

No, they dont leak. I have left the boat in the water for a couple of weeks.
I have more of a problem with rainwater. It has been a foot deep on occasions. Once on the move, it drains ok. I am working on a solution to the problem when the boat is static.

That's always a problem on any boat isn't it. Think the only solution really is regular checks if you can. Although if you live some distance from where the boats kept it's not always an option.
