Hello there!

IN this country, Seapros are retailed (exclusivly) by Bill Hingham Marine, who above all are reputed for very high prices!! Lastv month or possible the month before that, there was a review of this boat with an optimax 115 i think, in Rib international mag, AFAIAA it seemed to get a fairly strong review. The writer seemed to think that it was a sturdy way of getting a reasonable starter rib for not much money. I cant remember details off hand, but when I am back home ion the next couple of days I will dig out the article for you.

The engine on the back is an ex. RNLI one, (from an Atlantic 75) so it should prove as reliable as any However, if I do recall correctly, some people who have had these engines in the past have had trouble finding the serial numbers on the engine, I think this may have been to do with the hose starting ports or something? (chewy correct me if I'm wroing)

Above all it should probably be a good package, not that I'm really a qualified expert on the subject

Hi Oliver, I have just ordered a Seapro from Bill Higham a 470 with an Evinrude 70 hp ex RNLI 2004 Model.
Hopefully it should be ready sometime next week. It would be nice if you could dig up that review on them as I have only seen one review in a seafishing magazine, that also gave a good write up about the Seapro.

Here it is:

It's not hugely exciting, in fact I wouldn't be too surprised if it was word-perfectly identical to the one you've already seen, since my boat was used as a demo-model, I try to keep abreast of any reviews of it, and I have seen two if not more reviews of it that are all exactly the same down to the captions for the photos!!

Anyway, from what the review says it appears a solid boat as long as it has some seating!!

Hi Oliver i got rib in september 2009 the ribs are pritty basic seating wise butt for the price of them there not a bad rib, iv been out in choppy water a few times now and you dont get to wet,and as it said in the review they are pritty niffty, cheers for the review.

Not sure to be honest, the warm up intakes are at the bottom of the leg.
I can't think of anything that would have got in the wat of the serial numbers?

Thanks for that Oliver, not sure what year that review was written, but now, there are optional upgrades you can have on the rib extra seating and jockey console etc. At least it wasn't a negative review apart from the seating.

Thanks for those pics Andy , there very helpful I will have to get the dimensions of the parsun 4hp to see if it will fit at the side of my main engine othewise it looks like I might have to get a smaller back up.

Why on earth would you rely on a cheap chinese engine to get you out of trouble?!

Not bought one yet but most of the reviews on them have been good . 4hp £500,50 2yrs warranty , but I'am willing to listen to anyones comments and knowledge on them before I buy . The guy I'm thinking of buying one from wanted to sell me a Mariner 2 stroke 4hp 1990 model for £370 so I thought for an extra £180 quid I would go for a new parsun , what would you recommend ?

You just missed a Yamaha 2-stroke, 4hp, brand new , long-shaft, (2001) which was on Ebay this week. Still boxed and in original packaging. I know they're few and far between, but if I'd had the cash - it would have been a steal. Only trouble was - half the UK was bidding. Made £450 in the end. There's a long-shaft 4-stroke at Bill Higham, not cheap - but then what is?

Whilst simple technology, and most of mine hasn't rusted away - I don't know if I would describe it as particularly reliable without some TLC and delicate handling.

That said given the Parsun 4hp @ £550 w/ 2yr warranty v's 1990 Mariner 2 str 4hp for £370 decision I'd have been keeping the extra £180 in my pocket.

I was, but that was down to necessity.The 2 I had were the only engines that would fit in the gap on the SR4 transom. They had been completely stripped and rebuilt with new electrics,cleaned water passages etc as well.I trusted them because I knew exactly what condition they were in. I'm now running all Japanese.

Personally I wouldn't trust cheap Chinese materials technology or electrics enough to assume it'd start when it was the only option for getting home. I've seen far too many cheap Chinese Honda motorbike copies fall apart with major electrical issues and corrosion within 18 months of new.

I know where you are coming from - but its unlikely that it showns no visible signs of corrosion before you leave the slipway, and it starts fine when tested at the slipway. Are the cheap motorbikes not REALLY cheap though - these aren't that cheap. Now that might just mean someone is making more profit - or it might mean that there is a bit more care being taken?

A warranty is useless if it doesn't go when you're in the poo.

agreed. the reason i'd rather have the 20 yr old mainstream brand is it will almost certainly still be running in 5yrs time with basic tlc; whereas there is a good chance a cheap brand will not. Its telling that most manufacturers are now offering 5yr waranties, and Parsun are only offering 2.

Polwart I think that you have made a valid point on swaying me from buying a parsun engine with your constructive advice e.g. 2yrs warranty as opposed to other none Chinese makes which give 5yrs. With people like you this is what makes this a great and very informative site.
