Thanks for those pics Andy , there very helpful I will have to get the dimensions of the parsun 4hp to see if it will fit at the side of my main engine othewise it looks like I might have to get a smaller back up.

Why on earth would you rely on a cheap chinese engine to get you out of trouble?!

Not bought one yet but most of the reviews on them have been good . 4hp 500,50 2yrs warranty , but I'am willing to listen to anyones comments and knowledge on them before I buy . The guy I'm thinking of buying one from wanted to sell me a Mariner 2 stroke 4hp 1990 model for 370 so I thought for an extra 180 quid I would go for a new parsun , what would you recommend ?

You just missed a Yamaha 2-stroke, 4hp, brand new , long-shaft, (2001) which was on Ebay this week. Still boxed and in original packaging. I know they're few and far between, but if I'd had the cash - it would have been a steal. Only trouble was - half the UK was bidding. Made 450 in the end. There's a long-shaft 4-stroke at Bill Higham, not cheap - but then what is?

I don't know - I can think of a number of people who use (or have used) very old 1970's johnson 2 smokes. Unless I'm wrong you fall in that camp too. Whilst simple technology, and most of mine hasn't rusted away - I don't know if I would describe it as particularly reliable without some TLC and delicate handling.

That said given the Parsun 4hp @ 550 w/ 2yr warranty v's 1990 Mariner 2 str 4hp for 370 decision I'd have been keeping the extra 180 in my pocket.

I was, but that was down to necessity.The 2 I had were the only engines that would fit in the gap on the SR4 transom. They had been completely stripped and rebuilt with new electrics,cleaned water passages etc as well.I trusted them because I knew exactly what condition they were in. I'm now running all Japanese.

Personally I wouldn't trust cheap Chinese materials technology or electrics enough to assume it'd start when it was the only option for getting home. I've seen far too many cheap Chinese Honda motorbike copies fall apart with major electrical issues and corrosion within 18 months of new. A warranty is useless if it doesn't go when you're in the poo.

I know where you are coming from - but its unlikely that it showns no visible signs of corrosion before you leave the slipway, and it starts fine when tested at the slipway. Are the cheap motorbikes not REALLY cheap though - these aren't that cheap. Now that might just mean someone is making more profit - or it might mean that there is a bit more care being taken?

agreed. the reason i'd rather have the 20 yr old mainstream brand is it will almost certainly still be running in 5yrs time with basic tlc; whereas there is a good chance a cheap brand will not. Its telling that most manufacturers are now offering 5yr waranties, and Parsun are only offering 2.

Polwart I think that you have made a valid point on swaying me from buying a parsun engine with your constructive advice e.g. 2yrs warranty as opposed to other none Chinese makes which give 5yrs. With people like you this is what makes this a great and very informative site.
