Scorpion Ribs

Afternoon,

I have heard lots of very good things about them, in my mind, they are the nicest looking ribs i have seen.

what are peoples views on them, ideally i am after first hand experience of them, running them, any problems experienced, what they are good for, what they are not so good for.....

thanks
Howard.

I dont know any body who as owned a Scorpion that would want any other make.

After sales for me could not be better even down to them replacing the rubber seals FOC on the counsel after i broke them.
Try one last and make your own mind up

I do - he posts on here - Norwegian ribrafting lot - not that impressed with their Scorpion - now use Revengers.

They are not cheap, everything is inhouse built. Ask people on this forum.

Freetrader has a brand new 8,5m with e-tec 250. MarkM has a older one with same engine...if i remember right.

Take a close look at a scorpion, old or new, if you can visit scorpionribs and take a look and you will be impressed.

So difficult to explain really, but it is a combination of things that make it stand out. Hand built to order which includes getting your inside leg measured to insure your seats are to your size. The perfect hull which gives such a good ride, everyone will say there's is best but you go out in one and you will understand. You will note that the engine is offset which not only scorpoin do, but is a sign of a well set up boat.

We have had ours out in 55kts off Hurst castle in very confused seas and you can not fault them. Then look at deprecation of a scorpion in compression to any other rib and you will see why so many people stick with them and then buy another one.

Feel free to come and charter one for the day

Same here, we have a 8m Scorpion and we tested a few other established ribs before buying. The Scorpion has got the balance perfect between comfort and speed..
up from me..

Agree with that. In rough seas my Scorpion overtakes all the others. For example a Revenger has more speed than a Scorpion in the same setting but I can keep the speed up in the big waves.
In short it's the best there is.

Recommendation: put enough horsepower on. I've the 7.5 (7,75m long) with 250hp and that's great. Before I used to have a 150hp; used more fuel and was harder to drive in the bigger waves.

Not sure I like the way the tubes don't sit on the water at rest - do they rock when you're loading stuff on or moving about? Do you get tossed around (ooer) when you're fishing??

Yes the boat rocks, but very quick on the plane. There is no drag of the tubes.

There are two schools of thought with this one:

First - Tubes out - This means that although the boats rocks (depends on how high the tubes are), the tubes are not going to be in the water if you're on a mooring. It can also "wander" at slow speeds if someone moves around in the boat.

Second - Tubes in - This gives a very stable boat at rest and at displacement speeds, and with correct design will not influence top speeds - our race boat does well over 70mph with a 200hp engine! Our tubes always touch the water but it's a personal preference!

I had the pleasure of driving Lynx (with 275 Verado) back to Lymington from Ribex in typical Solent chop - what a well sorted boat! On second thoughts Howard don't charter this one unless you have very strong will power..

Codders it's not my place to explain here, but there is another side to this story

Maybe there is but why didn't anyone from Scorpion bother defending themselves? I most certainly would. Yes I agree they were giving their boat some very serious abuse but then again Scorpion were obviously aware of what the boat was used for. They don't seem to have the same trouble with their Revengers.

Scorpion

Interesting posts! I suspect Graham and the Scorpion crew don't defend, because they don't need to.

2 years ago I bought a 10 year old Scorpion, which exceeded all expectations. I live in the Channel Islands, and we get hit with the full fury of the Atlantic. I ran the boat for a full 2 seasons, including winter outings, and it never ever let me down (well the Optimax did, but that's another story ...). The rib itself is built with the most extraordinary attention to detail and build quality.

This year I treated myself to a new 8.5m. I put my old rib, Quick Exit, on the market and sold it in 3 days for £500 less than I bought it for. I've got zero criticisms of the new rib - the pacific rim seat at the stern, and superb build quality makes the boat really stand out (and it's yellow tubes help). The new rib lands better than the old one, it seems to have better weight distribution.

The experience of buying from Joyce (she's amazing!), and Graham's team was an absolute pleasure, and the after-sales service second to none.

I took the last rib through 30' F7 waves (witness to prove), and lived to tell the tale. There's nothing to beat it.

I don't dispute they are very good boats but I am very suprised a company that values it reputation so much can't be bothered to set the record straight!!!
